# Iran Recovered a $2.5 Million Dive-LD Intact

## Anduril's $2.5 Million Case

Anduril's defense of the program deserves to be taken literally. A company spokesperson told DefenseScoop that the "Dive-LD is an attritable autonomous system, meaning it is designed from the outset to operate in dangerous environments where loss of the vehicle is an expected possibility." Its "purpose is to keep warfighters out of the most dangerous parts of the undersea mission," the spokesperson said. "This vehicle had already delivered significant value operating thousands of hours in months-long operations in CENTCOM."

At the roughly $2.5 million unit price DefenseScoop cited in 2024, that case holds. ## The 5.8-Meter Vehicle

Dive-LD packages substantial reach into a vehicle 5.8 meters long and 1.2 meters in diameter. Army Recognition lists its weight at 2,720 to 2,800 kilograms, its speed at 2 to 8 knots and its range at nearly 600 kilometers. Anduril rates it for depths down to 6,000 meters and missions lasting as long as 10 days.

The vehicle combines hybrid acoustic-inertial navigation with modular payload bays and roughly one cubic meter of payload space. Its free-flooded architecture lets seawater pass through the outer structure while pressure vessels protect the electronics, and the outer shell is additively manufactured. Open interfaces let operators swap sonar, optical and navigation packages without redesigning the vehicle.

The Financial Times reported a covert four-month U.S. operation to detect and clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz, conducted largely at night with Navy SEAL divers, robotic boats and specialized underwater craft. Uncrewed systems searched the seabed before divers approached suspected mines.

The War Zone assessed that the disabled vehicle's survey mission could support mine clearance or update seafloor maps along the route near Oman that U.S. forces have used to move shipping. Accurate depth and obstruction data matter when large commercial vessels must follow a constrained corridor. The work is slow, repetitive and dangerous. The commercial stakes exceed the value of any one drone. Army Recognition says the strait handled 25% of global seaborne oil and 20% of liquefied natural gas trade before the 2026 conflict, with traffic falling to single-digit daily transits during parts of August.

The mine picture remains uncertain. "It's hard to know what to believe. Iran is certainly trying to re-mine," Ethan Connell, assistant director of Taiwan Security Monitor, told the Financial Times. That uncertainty creates demand for repeated surveys rather than one completed map, and puts more autonomous hulls into waters where Iran can search for them.

## Iran's Intact Hull

The strongest counterargument starts with what Iran apparently did not receive. Hawkins said the vehicle carried no classified sonar or radar and had collected no sensitive data. Sandboxx argues that its off-the-shelf components contain little deeply classified knowledge, while the design's dimensions, mission categories and broad performance are already public. The immediate intelligence return may therefore be limited.

An intact hull still answers engineering questions that specifications do not. Army Recognition identifies the exposed elements: hull construction, internal volume, propulsion, energy storage, buoyancy, control surfaces, navigation hardware, electrical architecture, connectors, manufacturing methods and modular payload interfaces. Together, those choices produce the advertised depth and endurance. A brochure gives the output. The recovered vehicle shows how the compromises fit.

Iran has pursued such opportunities before. It recovered an RQ-170 Sentinel in 2011 and later built derivatives. The IRGC tried to seize a U.S. Navy Saildrone in the Persian Gulf on Aug. 29, 2022, then temporarily took two more in the Red Sea days later. Army Recognition also notes Iran's recovery of JASSM-ER wreckage.

Tehran has promised to reverse-engineer the Dive-LD, according to The War Zone, and could share access or findings with Russia or China. There is no evidence that either transfer has occurred, and possession does not guarantee that Iran can reproduce the vehicle's performance, software or production quality.

The risk is narrower than wholesale technological compromise, but harder to dismiss. When a design's advantage lies in manufacturability rather than a secret sensor, an intact example is particularly useful to a copier. The method is a large part of the product.

## Quonset Point and the Export Map

Anduril is scaling that method. Defense Daily reported that the company's 150,000-square-foot plant at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, came online in late 2025\. Anduril aims to raise the Dive-LD line to maximum capacity by the end of 2027 and finish a second line for the larger Dive-XL by the end of 2026.

Current Dive-LD output runs around 50 vehicles a year against a stated plan for 200, according to Sandboxx. Autonocion found that the full set of outer-hull components can be printed in less than two days. That production cycle is why 200 underwater vehicles a year can be contemplated at all.

The exposure extends beyond the U.S. Navy. Autonocion says the Royal Australian Navy already operates Dive-LD and Anduril's Sydney line can build LD variants alongside Ghost Shark, the extra-large Australian vehicle that Dive Technologies also supplied the technical base for. Australia's initial Ghost Shark effort allocated roughly $100 million to three iterative prototypes, Army Recognition calculates. Losing a $2.5 million reconnaissance AUV differs financially from losing an extra-large vehicle carrying more sensitive sensors and payloads.

Taiwan adds another consequence. The Central News Agency reported in June that the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology had conducted acceptance training with Anduril personnel at the naval base at Zuoying before an expected August delivery. The training vehicle carried Republic of China and U.S. flags, "TAIWAN" and "USA" lettering, and the identifier H-014\. NCSIST described planned cable and pipeline inspections using synthetic-aperture sonar, a multibeam echosounder, a magnetometer and a high-resolution camera, and Autonocion says the purchased vehicle is contractually restricted to civilian work such as inspecting the undersea cables carrying the island's internet. A civilian restriction does not make the manufacturing architecture different.

## Recovery Before Attrition

Attritable procurement transfers part of the risk from the operator to the producer and its customers. The Navy can lose a $2.5 million Dive-LD and continue operations, which is the intended outcome, and the September loss does not invalidate it.

Scale changes the frequency of the problem. Every additional hull at sea creates another chance that a propulsion, power, navigation or communications failure leaves a vehicle available for recovery, and the same basic design now spans a U.S. Navy unit, the Royal Australian Navy and Taiwan's state research institute.

Army Recognition identifies the missing operational layer: localization, recovery or denial measures that can act before an adversary retrieves a disabled underwater vehicle. Public reporting does not establish whether later Dive builds include a scuttling or other denial capability. Mass and denial discipline need to arrive together. So far, only the mass is visible.

## The Next Dive-LD Displays

Iran's next display will indicate whether exploitation has moved beyond propaganda. Exterior footage proves possession. Disassembled pressure vessels, propulsion components, connectors or payload interfaces would show that technical examination has begun.

Production provides two dated checks: whether Quonset Point reaches maximum Dive-LD capacity by the end of 2027, and whether the Dive-XL line opens by the end of 2026\. Taiwan supplies a third, in whether the planned August delivery occurred and whether the civilian-use restriction holds. In Hormuz, the immediate question is whether the mine-clearance effort resumes if Iran continues trying to re-mine the strait. Each new survey would renew the logic for sending another Dive-LD, and the possibility that another one will stop.
