# Russia's Geran-5 Is Fast, Flawed and Hostage to One Chinese Engine

*The missile-shaped drone has reached Kyiv and caught Iran's eye. Its headline capabilities are unproven, its range is contested, and every production figure published for it leads back to a single imported turbojet.*

## Kyiv Under Jet Attack

On September 2 and 3, Russian forces launched [Geran-5](https://www.battlepolicy.com/geran-5/) weapons toward Kyiv on consecutive days from about 400 kilometers away, and Ukrainian air defence shot them down, presidential defence-technology adviser Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov said in remarks carried by [Defense Express](https://en.defence-ua.com/weapon%5Fand%5Ftech/russia%5Flaunches%5Fnew%5Fgeran%5F5%5Fsystems%5Ftoward%5Fkyiv-19669.html?ref=battlepolicy.com). His caveat: "Jet-powered interceptors won't be of much help here."

These are photo captions; the Air Force publishes no type-level counts.

Before September, the Geran-5 existed mainly in disclosures and displays: first use in January 2026, a public showing on May 9\. Defence Intelligence of Ukraine lists 6.5 meters, 850 kilograms at takeoff, a 90-kilogram warhead, 450 to 600 kilometers per hour and a Chinese Telefly TF-TJ2000A turbojet. In three weeks, the weapon has gained a Kyiv combat record, an official interception rate near 60% and a prospective customer in Iran. The record also shows a weapon with real flaws and a supply chain that hangs on one imported part. Its production figures conflict, and read together they point to the Telefly engine, rather than Alabuga's factory space, as the ceiling on Russia's low-cost cruise-missile substitute.

## DIU's Production Ledger

Ukraine's intelligence figures describe incompatible factories. In May 2026, DIU put combined [Geran-4](https://www.battlepolicy.com/geran-4/) and Geran-5 serial capacity at up to 500 a month. By August, it estimated output at about 3,000 a month, exceeding production of roughly 2,800 [Shahed-136](https://www.battlepolicy.com/shahed-136/)\-derived Geran-2s.

Military sources told [RBC-Ukraine](https://newsukraine.rbc.ua/analytics/kyiv-under-jet-powered-terror-how-russia-1788528351.html?ref=battlepolicy.com) that September's plan instead called for 1,200 Geran-4s, 800 Geran-5s, 2,700 Geran-2s and 5,000 Gerbera decoys. Those sources said Moscow wants jet types to comprise about 80% of drone attacks by November.

The same sources said China had supplied only 3,000 Telefly engines, one-sixth of Moscow's requirement. Each airframe flies on a single turbojet. On a common monthly basis, a combined capacity of 500, output of 3,000, a plan for 2,000 and an engine supply of 3,000 cannot all describe the same production reality.

Launches offer the harder measure. The Ukrainian Air Force counted more than 2,800 jet drones in August, while Beskrestnov put use at about 300 in June and roughly 1,500 in July. Our reading of those figures is that Russia is producing somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 jet Gerans a month, with the Geran-5 the minority model. The only disclosed type split assigns it 800 of 2,000 jet Gerans.

Deputy intelligence chief Vadym Skibitskyi says Russia is "completely dependent" on Chinese engines costing $35,000 to $40,000 each. DIU also says Geran-3 production stopped, while RBC's military sources attribute the halt to Moscow freeing components for the Geran-4 and Geran-5\. Every estimate, whatever its volume, puts the constraint in the same place.

## A Supply Chain With One Door

The supply chain is the Geran-5's deepest weakness, and it starts with price. The engine consumes an unusually large share of the weapon's value. [CNN](https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/17/europe/russia-attacks-europe-misstep-analysis-intl?ref=battlepolicy.com), citing Ukrainian officials and media reports, places the turbojet near $40,000 and the complete drone near $70,000\. Straight Arrow News estimates about $100,000 for a Geran-5, against more than $2 million for a Tomahawk-class cruise missile. By our arithmetic, the engine represents roughly 40% to more than half of the airframe's cost.

DIU's component inventory names electronics from Texas Instruments, CTS Corporation and Monolithic Power Systems in the United States, Infineon in Germany, and a Chinese Xingkai Tech XK-F358 mesh modem. Some chips carry production dates after the full-scale invasion, which means the sanctions leak is current, and traceable. The small Chinese turbojets enter Russia declared as civilian products, Defense Express found, and RBC's sources say the Kremlin is trying to start engine production of its own because it has no second supplier. Public listings for the Telefly engine give 200 kilograms-force of thrust from a 29-kilogram unit, [Militarnyi](https://militarnyi.com/en/news/study-finds-russian-geran-5-drone-relies-on-american-and-german-components/?ref=battlepolicy.com) reported.

DroneSec chief executive Mike Monnik calls Russia "critically dependent" on Chinese components, in reporting summarised by Meduza.

The Financial Times reported that newer Gerans carry thermal cameras, AI-powered guidance, Russian anti-jam antennas and Chinese network modems. Beskrestnov described an operator locking a target through the camera, after which the drone attacks automatically. Neither account ties that seeker to the Geran-5 alone.

## The Flaws Behind the Speed

Speed is the Geran-5's one proven advantage. Much of the rest is claim. Its range is contested: DIU's January disclosure gave about 1,000 kilometers, DIU's own portal gives 950, and [Defense Express](https://en.defence-ua.com/news/which%5Frussian%5Fjet%5Fpowered%5Fdrones%5Fcan%5Ffly%5F900%5Fkm%5Fand%5Fstrike%5Fwestern%5Fukraine-19513.html?ref=battlepolicy.com) calls the published figure a theoretical maximum, with practical reach 30% to 50% lower on the evasive routes a real strike requires. Flown straight and high, the outlet added, the drone becomes "a relatively easy target." Reach and survivability trade against each other.

The two features that set it apart on paper, air launch from a [Su-25](https://www.battlepolicy.com/su-25-frogfoot/) and an [R-73](https://www.battlepolicy.com/r-73/) air-to-air missile under the wing, rest on photographs and an intelligence assessment. Neither has been documented in use.

The airframe is also big, costly and tied to fixed ground. An 850-kilogram drone needs a launch rail about 80 meters long, and only two jet-Geran launch sites are publicly known, Militarnyi has reported. Ruslan Pukhov, head of Moscow's Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, said in remarks carried by [Euromaidan Press](https://euromaidanpress.com/2026/09/14/iran-armed-russia-with-shaheds-now-it-wants-the-jet-powered-geran-5-remake-back-to-fight-israel-and-the-us/?ref=battlepolicy.com) that Russia "essentially skipped" the long testing period and checks changes in combat. CNN's judgment is that these weapons make up in volume what they "lack in polish or accuracy." And on both days the Geran-5 was named over Kyiv, it was shot down.

## Ukraine's Interception Gap

Jet Gerans break the economics of Ukraine's established drone defence. Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat puts their interception rate just above 60%, versus 90% to 95% for piston-powered models. On September 1 it stopped 57 of 72, nearly 80%.

Ihnat explains the mechanism. A man-portable air-defence system reaches about 4.5 kilometers, but a jet drone flying at 5 kilometers or higher sits beyond it. That leaves electronic warfare, scarce surface-to-air missiles and aircraft.

Ukraine has drones able to catch the newest Gerans, an unnamed official told the Wall Street Journal, but only a few hundred against the thousands required. Defence Minister Yevhen Khmara says four candidate interceptors have completed field tests. President Volodymyr Zelensky says about 60 companies are working on counters.

[Unmanned Airspace](https://www.unmannedairspace.info/counter-uas-systems-and-policies/ukraine-and-its-allies-accelerate-work-on-high-speed-interceptors-as-russia-evolves-geran-threat/?ref=battlepolicy.com) prices the Ukrainian Griffen jet interceptor near $10,000 and lists Western low-cost missiles such as X-Bow's Buckler at under $100,000 a round. Beskrestnov's scepticism about jet interceptors and the ministry's programme remain an open disagreement.

## Tsymbulova and Telefly

Ukraine's strike on the Tsymbulova launch site in Oryol Oblast exposed the poor economics of attacking launch positions. By September 1, the strike had reportedly damaged one position, according to [Defense Express](https://en.defence-ua.com/analysis/how%5Fmany%5Fcluster%5Fwarhead%5Fatacms%5Fmissiles%5Fwould%5Fit%5Ftake%5Fto%5Fcover%5Fentire%5Fdrone%5Fport%5Flaunching%5Frussias%5Fgeran%5F4%5Fand%5Fgeran%5F5-19636.html?ref=battlepolicy.com). The facility covers more than 2.5 square kilometers about 180 kilometers from Ukraine, with dispersed positions protected by earthworks.

Defense Express calculated that blanketing it would take roughly 250 M39A1 ATACMS missiles, about 20 if aimed at individual positions, and the launchers are cheap. Even storage areas leave the production bottleneck alone.

The Financial Times reported, citing Western security officials and a source close to the Kremlin, that Iran has asked Moscow for advanced Gerans for use against Israel and the United States. The country whose Karrar design DIU sees in the Geran-5 now wants the Russian derivative. Rochan Consulting's Konrad Muzyka calls the convergence with cruise missiles "cruisification".

A weapon whose engine accounts for roughly half its price, comes from a Chinese supplier through sanctions evasion and now attracts a second state as a buyer creates a clear market consequence. Export controls and interdiction aimed at Telefly engines offer a cheaper interceptor than repeated strikes on dispersed launch sites. RBC's military sources say Moscow still intends jet drones to reach about 80% of its attacks by November.
