APKWS

APKWS is the cheap precision kit that turns a dumb 70mm rocket into a laser-guided munition — the ~$25,000 round underneath VAMPIRE, the OA-1K, and F-16s shooting down Shaheds over the Red Sea. Not a missile, but a guidance section that clips into rockets the fleet already carries.

The cheapest precision munition in the arsenal — APKWS is not a missile but a guidance kit that clips into the middle of an ordinary 70mm rocket and turns it into a laser-guided weapon for a fraction of a Hellfire's price. That simple trick has made it the workhorse of the counter-drone cost war: it is the round inside L3Harris's VAMPIRE downing Shaheds over Ukraine, the weapon F-16s and F-15s fire to swat Houthi drones out of the Red Sea, and the ordnance hanging under the OA-1K and the Apache. At roughly $25,000 a shot against $20,000 drones, it is the munition that finally put a precision kill within budget — and BAE has built more than 100,000 of them.

Overview

APKWS (the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System, designated AGR-20 on fixed-wing aircraft and AGR-19 on helicopters) is a BAE Systems laser-guidance kit — a mid-body guidance section that installs between the motor and warhead of a standard unguided Hydra 70 rocket, converting it into a semi-active laser-guided precision munition. It exists to fill the gap between the cheap, inaccurate unguided rocket and the expensive Hellfire missile: same rocket, same launcher, precision guidance, at roughly a sixth of a Hellfire's cost. Its guidance is DASALS — a Distributed Aperture Semi-Active Laser Seeker with optics on four flip-out wings that home on a target illuminated by an external designator. Fielded in 2012 and combat-proven in Afghanistan that April, APKWS became ubiquitous across US helicopters and jets — but its defining second act is counter-drone warfare: the ground-launched VAMPIRE kit uses it to kill Shaheds in Ukraine, and the air-to-air AGR-20F "FALCO" variant (a software-and-fuze upgrade) turned F-16s, F-15Es and A-10s into cheap drone-hunters over the Red Sea from 2024. The economics are the whole story: at ~$25,000 a shot — the guidance section alone runs $15,000–20,000 — APKWS lets a defender trade roughly one-for-one against a $20,000 Shahed instead of burning a million-dollar air-to-air missile, and it does so from magazines forty-plus rounds deep. BAE delivered its 100,000th kit in February 2026 and holds a $1.7 billion order for tens of thousands more.

Development

APKWS began as a General Dynamics concept — a low-cost laser seeker and flip-out guidance wings for the Hydra 70 — and matured as APKWS II under BAE Systems, entering service in 2012 after initial operational test and evaluation, per Army Technology. Its first combat use came in Afghanistan in April 2012 from rotary-wing platforms. The US Navy funded expansion to fixed-wing aircraft (A-10, AV-8B) in 2011, the USAF put it on F-16s and A-10s operationally in 2016, and an air-to-air capability was demonstrated on an F-16 in 2019 — the seed of the counter-drone role. The counter-drone explosion came in 2024–2026: USAF F-16s used the air-to-air AGR-20F FALCO to make their first combat drone intercepts over the Red Sea in 2024 against Houthi one-way attack drones, and integration spread fast — F-15Es (up to 42 rockets), A-10s returning from CENTCOM with UAS kill markings, USMC F/A-18s, and even an MQ-9 as launcher. Ground-launched, the L3Harris VAMPIRE used APKWS to down Shaheds in Ukraine (a filmed night kill near Odesa in August 2025), and a Ukrainian F-16 downed a Russian Shahed with APKWS during a mass strike in February 2026. BAE's production scaled to match: an August 2025 US Navy IDIQ worth up to $1.7 billion (full-rate lots, up to ~55,000 kits), a February 2026 USAF ~$145 million order for a dual-mode air-to-air variant to counter swarms of "as many as 200" drones, and the 100,000th guidance kit delivered on 24 February 2026 from BAE's New Hampshire and Texas lines, per The Defense Post.

Design & capabilities

APKWS's elegance is that it changes almost nothing about the rocket it upgrades. Three components make a round: a standard Hydra 70 rocket motor, a warhead (M151, Mk152 or M282) and fuze, and — clipped between them — the APKWS guidance section. That mid-body placement is the key design choice: it keeps the kit motor-agnostic (compatible with existing 70mm rockets and launchers) and requires no aircraft modification, so any platform that fires Hydra rockets can fire APKWS from the same 7-tube LAU-131 or 19-round pods. Guidance is DASALS: instead of one expensive nose seeker, low-cost laser optics sit on each of four flip-out wings, collecting reflected energy from a target illuminated by a ground, aircraft or self-designating laser — "point-and-shoot," plug-and-play, no maintenance. The magazine depth this buys is the tactical payoff: an F-15E can carry up to 42 guided rockets on pylons that once held a single missile, an Apache up to 76 across four pods — orders of magnitude more precision shots per sortie than a Hellfire loadout. The air-to-air FALCO (AGR-20F) variant adds a proximity-fuzed warhead and air-to-air guidance algorithms (a software upgrade), suited to "steady-flying, low-performance targets" — drones and subsonic cruise missiles, explicitly not a dogfight weapon. Keep two numbers honest: APKWS's air-to-air engagement range is not officially published (the ~11 km figures circulating are video-game data), and the 200-drone-swarm capability is a program goal for the new dual-mode variant, not a demonstrated feat. The 2025–26 evolution — a dual-mode kit adding an infrared seeker for fire-and-forget, reducing the need for continuous laser designation — is APKWS answering its one real weakness: the requirement to keep a laser on the target.

Combat record / operational use

APKWS's combat record splits into its two eras. As a precision ground-attack rocket it has served since Afghanistan in 2012 across US and allied helicopters and jets — cheap, accurate fires against soft and light targets. As a counter-drone effector it has become one of the defining weapons of the 2024–2026 drone wars: USAF F-16s made the first air-to-air drone intercepts with the FALCO variant over the Red Sea in 2024 and racked up Houthi-drone kills through 2025; A-10s came home from CENTCOM stenciled with UAS kill marks; and in Ukraine the ground-launched VAMPIRE downed Shaheds (a filmed August 2025 night kill), while a Ukrainian F-16 killed a Russian Shahed with APKWS during a February 2026 mass strike. The 2026 Iran war drove counter-drone demand across the Middle East to record levels. Drawbacks / limitations

  • Laser tether — the base kit needs continuous laser designation to impact; the dual-mode IR variant is only now fixing this.
  • Limited air-to-air envelope — effective only against slow, non-maneuvering targets (drones, subsonic cruise missiles), not agile aircraft; published range is scarce.
  • Small warhead — a 70mm rocket warhead kills drones and soft targets, not armor or hardened structures.
  • Still costs more than the drone — at ~$25,000 it is favorable versus missiles but roughly one-for-one against a $20,000 Shahed, not a decisive cost win like a $2,000 interceptor drone.

Counterparts

APKWS sits at the munition layer beneath the platforms this lexicon covers. Its host counter-drone systems are the VAMPIRE (ground-launched) and the light-attack OA-1K Skyraider II and AT-6 Wolverine, and its rotary-wing carriers are the AH-64 Apache and AH-1Z Viper. As a counter-drone effector it competes and complements with the Coyote interceptor and the cheap interceptor drones — Sting, Merops — sitting between them and the expensive tiers: cheaper than a Stinger MANPADS, vastly cheaper than the SM-3 or an air-to-air missile, but pricier than a $2,000 FPV interceptor. Its target set is the Shahed-136 and Geran-3 drone stream. Outlook

APKWS's trajectory is defined by the counter-drone surge and the dual-mode upgrade. The fire-and-forget evolution — adding an infrared seeker so the round no longer needs continuous laser designation — is the pivotal development, removing APKWS's one real tactical weakness and enabling the swarm-engagement goal (the "200 drones" the USAF program targets); whether it delivers that against real saturation raids is the capability question to watch. Production is on a record run (100,000 kits delivered, up to 55,000 more on order, new lines and fuze contracts), driven by Red Sea and 2026-Iran-war demand and export interest across the Middle East — though the specific figures circulating (Israel's reported 10,000-rocket need, Qatar's ~$1 billion, the "20,000 taken from Ukraine" story) are single-source or investing-press framing to treat cautiously. Platform spread continues (F/A-18, MQ-9, more allies via FMS), extending the round to nearly every launcher that fires 70mm rockets.
