Background

Array Labs was founded in 2021 by Andrew Peterson, chief executive, with co-founder Jose Isaac Robledo, and operates from the San Francisco Bay Area — company releases give Redwood City, while Peterson's own listings say Palo Alto. It is a Y Combinator company.

Its approach departs from the rest of the radar-imaging field. Conventional synthetic-aperture radar satellites, including those from ICEYE, Umbra and Capella tracked in this directory, fly individually and build an image from one aperture's motion.

Array Labs instead flies a cluster of mass-manufacturable radar satellites in formation, treating them as a single distributed sensor: because the observations arrive from several positions at once, the processing system has the geometry to reconstruct height as well as position, producing 3D imagery in near real time. The first production cluster is designed around four satellites.

Peterson's stated ambition is a 20 cm-resolution 3D map of the world, refreshed continuously.

Array Labs raised $21 million in an oversubscribed strategic round anchored by Mitsubishi Electric — one of Japan's largest defence and aerospace companies — with continued participation from Catapult Ventures, Kompas VC and Y Combinator.

Earlier funding came through Y Combinator and seed investors including Seraphim.

The Mitsubishi Electric anchor is the notable structural feature rather than the amount.

A strategic investment from a foreign prime with its own space and radar business is a different instrument from a financial round: it usually implies manufacturing, component or market access, and it ties a US space startup to a Japanese industrial partner at a moment when Japan is expanding its own defence space programmes.

No revenue, valuation or backlog has been disclosed.

Major customers & contracts

Array Labs says its customers are primarily in defence and security, and identifies work with DARPA, the US Navy and the US Air Force.

No contract values are public, and no National Reconnaissance Office relationship is documented in the sources reviewed here — a distinction worth preserving, since NRO commercial radar contracts are the benchmark award in this segment and Umbra and Capella hold them.

The Mitsubishi Electric relationship may function as a customer channel as well as an investment, but nothing specific has been announced.

Competitive position

Array Labs competes with an established commercial radar field: ICEYE, now valued above €10 billion after a €1 billion Series F; Umbra, with NRO contract extensions; Capella Space; and Synspective and iQPS in Japan. All of them fly single satellites and sell 2D imagery.

The distributed-cluster architecture is a genuine technical differentiator rather than a marketing one — 3D reconstruction from simultaneous multi-angle radar returns is a different product, not a better version of the same one.

For defence users the relevant application is change detection and terrain modelling in denied areas, where height information distinguishes a revetment from a shadow and a real vehicle from a decoy.

The corresponding risk is compounded. A constellation business is capital-intensive and Array Labs has raised $21 million against ICEYE's €1 billion; and a cluster architecture requires four satellites to fly in precise formation before the product exists at all, where a competitor's first satellite produces sellable imagery on day one.

The failure mode is not a bad image, it is no image until the whole cluster works.

Battlefield relevance

No direct combat use — Array Labs supplies space-based sensing rather than weapons.

Its relevance is drawn from Ukraine, where commercial SAR imagery has been central to targeting, damage assessment and monitoring Russian movements through cloud and darkness, and where ICEYE's constellation in particular became a documented part of Ukrainian targeting. The company's systems are not yet operational at that scale.
