Background
John Gedmark (CEO) and Ryan McLinko (CTO) co-founded Astranis in San Francisco in 2015 with a thesis that geostationary orbit was underserved by small, affordable dedicated satellites rather than shared capacity or low-Earth constellations.
The core platform is MicroGEO — a software-defined, small GEO satellite built entirely in-house. Newer variants include Omega, optimized for relocatable and multiband coverage, and UtilitySat, aimed at sovereign and government connectivity.
All vehicles are designed and assembled at the company's 153,000 sq. ft. Northern California facility, giving Astranis vertical integration from payload through bus.
Astranis sells dedicated satellite capacity directly to telecoms, ISPs, and governments requiring sovereign connectivity, and pursues U.S. government programs of record as a prime contractor.

Astranis closed a $300 million Series E in May 2026, accompanied by up to $155 million in additional credit capacity, bringing total capital raised to more than $1.2 billion. The latest disclosed post-money valuation is $1.4 billion, set at the 2025 Series D close; the May 2026 Series E sources do not publish an updated valuation figure, so the $1.4 billion figure should be treated as a floor. Competitive position
Against Starlink (SpaceX), Astranis competes on dedicated capacity and sovereign control: a single MicroGEO gives a customer exclusive bandwidth and orbital rights that a shared LEO constellation cannot offer, though Starlink's cost-per-bit and global footprint are significant advantages at scale. Against traditional GEO manufacturers — Airbus Defence & Space, Maxar (now part of Advent), and Northrop Grumman — Astranis offers faster build cycles and lower per-satellite cost, but lacks the heritage and program credibility those primes bring to large DoD procurements.
Against ViaSat and Hughes (EchoStar), Astranis targets customers who want their own dedicated satellite rather than leased capacity, a structural differentiation but one that limits addressable market.
