Kyiv ISR startup betting Ukraine's drone war goes up-market: an AI-piloted, GPS-denied VTOL recon platform, Axon-backed, pitched at Western buyers who buy on quality, not price.
Background
Buntar Aerospace was founded in August 2023 in Kyiv by Ivan Kaunov (CEO), Bohdan Sas and Kateryna Bezsudna — the name a nod to the Ukrainian title of a Star Wars film. Kaunov, a Kyiv fintech founder (co-founder of Finmap), joined the army after Russia's 2022 invasion, was wounded near Bakhmut, then flew reconnaissance drones; the frustration of losing recon UAVs to Russian jamming became the product thesis. The company builds premium ISR drones plus 'Copilot,' AI software for mission planning and GPS-independent navigation.
Its flagship Buntar-3 is an electric VTOL with roughly 3.5-4 hours' endurance (claimed among the best for electric VTOLs), a ~100 km operational reach, custom EW-resistant radios, GNSS-denied navigation and an interceptor-evasion system in development. The earlier Buntar-1 (Buntar One) is a tactical recon UAV with AI visual navigation; a cheaper fixed-wing, the Skyhopper (~$20k), has sold in the tens. Reporting also references Buntar units '1, 2 and 3' in testing, though a distinct 'Buntar-2' is not publicly detailed. The team — about 60 people as of late 2024 — runs three R&D tracks (airframe, mission software, and GPS-free navigation) and operates partly through a UK entity to ease Western investment and eventual sales.
