CJ-1000

The CJ-1000 is a Chinese road-mobile, scramjet-powered hypersonic cruise missile presented for long-range land attack and anti-ship missions, although its deployment status and performance remain unverified.

Overview

The CJ-1000 (Chang Jian 1000, or "Long Sword 1000") is a Chinese hypersonic cruise missile unveiled in Beijing on 3 September 2025. It appeared in the V-Day parade's Cruise Missile Formation alongside the CJ-20A and YJ-18C, which Chinese state media characterized as long-range precision-strike weapons for operations across multiple domains. Parade coverage by CGTN identified the CJ-1000 as one of the event's newly exhibited cruise missiles.

The system is reported to use an air-breathing scramjet and to support both land-attack and anti-ship missions. This distinguishes it from boost-glide weapons such as the DF-17: a hypersonic cruise missile sustains powered atmospheric flight rather than releasing an unpowered glide vehicle after rocket boost. That architecture could permit sustained speed and manoeuvring over a longer portion of the flight, but no official CJ-1000 flight profile or performance specification has been released.

The CJ designation, derived from Chang Jian, is normally associated with China's land-attack cruise missiles, while the YJ designation is used for anti-ship missiles. The CJ-1000's name therefore indicates a land-attack emphasis even though reporting also assigns it a maritime-strike role. Claims that it is the first operational land-based scramjet-powered hypersonic cruise missile should be treated as attributed claims rather than established fact: public evidence confirms its display, not its service entry, deployed inventory or reliability.
