Overview

Cosmos 2553, also transliterated Kosmos-2553, is a Russian military satellite launched in February 2022 and placed in a sparsely populated, near-circular orbit at approximately 2,000 km altitude. Russia describes it as a technology spacecraft for testing new instruments under radiation and heavy charged-particle exposure. Independent researcher Bart Hendrickx instead identifies it as the first spacecraft in the Neitron programme, military index 14F01, and assesses that it probably carries a synthetic-aperture radar derived from Russia's Kondor reconnaissance-satellite family, as detailed by The Space Review.

The satellite acquired wider strategic significance in 2024, when US officials disclosed that Russia was pursuing a space-based nuclear anti-satellite system. Subsequent reporting connected Cosmos 2553 to that programme as a possible test or pathfinder spacecraft, while emphasizing that it was not itself assessed to be a deployed weapon. Its actual payload and principal mission remain disputed.

Observations indicating uncontrolled movement from November 2024 led analysts to assess that the satellite had probably ceased functioning. Later observations briefly complicated that judgment, but the public evidence summarized in the CSIS Space Threat Assessment 2025 supports treating Cosmos 2553 as probably non-operational rather than as an active orbital weapon.
