Forpost-R

Russia's indigenized, armed derivative of the Israeli IAI Searcher II UAV, adapted for reconnaissance, target designation and light precision strike after the cutoff of Israeli-supplied components.

Overview

Forpost-R is a Russian reusable reconnaissance and light-strike unmanned aircraft built by the Ural Civil Aviation Plant (UZGA) as the domestically re-engineered successor to the license-assembled Forpost, itself derived from Israel Aerospace Industries' Searcher II. Ukraine's Defence Intelligence (GUR) lists foreign components under Forpost-R, including an Australian Jabiru 2200 engine and American semiconductor devices. GUR's component entries, published in September 2024 and retained in its May 2026 record, document historical component use without establishing the configuration of every subsequently built aircraft.

The system occupies a middle tier in Russia's UAV force structure: larger, more expensive and more capable than short-range tactical drones such as Orlan-10, but much smaller than purpose-built MALE UCAVs such as Orion. In Ukraine, Russian forces have used the Forpost family primarily for reconnaissance and target designation, with documented Forpost-R strike sorties using small guided munitions. Ukraine's 414th Unmanned Systems Brigade “Magyar's Birds” reported destroying a Forpost-R over Kursk Oblast with a Chaklun-KM interceptor at 4,300 m on 27 July 2026.
