An Israeli tactical long-endurance uncrewed aircraft used for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and strike missions, and the precursor to the Hermes 900 and Watchkeeper WK450.

Overview

The Hermes 450 is a medium-sized, reusable uncrewed aircraft system developed by Elbit Systems for tactical intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and, in Israeli service, strike missions. Known as the Zik in the Israeli Air Force, it combines a 180 kg payload capacity with long endurance and autonomous flight from take-off through landing. Elbit Systems describes the aircraft as a combat-proven platform with more than 300,000 operational flight hours and markets it for land and maritime missions using electro-optical, radar and signals-intelligence payloads.

Introduced in 1998, the Hermes 450 became one of Israel's principal tactical UAVs and secured operators across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. It also provided the airframe lineage for the larger Hermes 900 and the British Watchkeeper WK450. Its operational history spans surveillance and strike activity in the Middle East, British deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq, Georgian reconnaissance over Abkhazia, and domestic-security missions in Brazil. That record demonstrates both the aircraft's adaptability and its vulnerability when operated within reach of fighter aircraft or modern surface-to-air missiles.
