Overview

Quarterhorse is a sequence of uncrewed technology-demonstration aircraft developed by Atlanta-based Hermeus with support from the US Defense Innovation Unit. The programme separates the high-speed flight problem into successive test articles rather than attempting to produce an operational aircraft in one step. Its stated objective is flight at speeds as high as Mach 3, but neither Hermeus nor the available reporting has published the maximum speed actually achieved.

The initial Quarterhorse Mk 1 supported ground and low-speed flight testing. The larger Mk 2 or Mk 2.1 configuration adds an F-16-class airframe, delta wing, variable inlet and Pratt & Whitney F100 engine. Hermeus presents the series as a development path toward Darkhorse, a proposed uncrewed hypersonic military aircraft rather than a Quarterhorse production variant. Hermeus describes Quarterhorse as a rapid, iterative flight-test programme for reducing the technical risk attached to that objective.

Quarterhorse is not a weapon and has no publicly identified operational customer, production order, payload or armament. Its immediate significance lies in high-speed aeronautics and software integration. In September 2026, Hermeus selected Anduril's Lattice for Mission Autonomy for Quarterhorse Mk 2, creating a test case for integrating a commercially supplied autonomy layer into another manufacturer's high-Mach aircraft.
