Background

Kepler Communications was founded in 2015 by a group of graduate students in Toronto, Ontario, initially focused on small-satellite radio-frequency communications before pivoting to optical inter-satellite link (OISL) technology as its core differentiator.

Competitive position

Kepler's closest direct competitor in commercial optical inter-satellite relay is Skyloom Global, which is also building a dedicated OISL relay constellation; Kepler holds a first-mover edge having commissioned Tranche 1, while Skyloom has not yet disclosed an equivalent operational milestone. Tesat-Spacecom, the dominant supplier of OISL terminals to European and U.S. government programs, competes indirectly as a hardware vendor that could enable rival constellations; Kepler's vertically integrated network-as-a-service model differentiates it from a terminal-only supplier.
