Background
Kodiak AI, Inc. — Kodiak Robotics until its public listing — was founded in April 2018 by Don Burnette, who remains chief executive. It is headquartered at Terra Bella Avenue in Mountain View, California, with operations in Lancaster, Texas.
The company listed on Nasdaq as KDK on 25 September 2025 after completing a business combination with Ares Acquisition Corporation II, a transaction that brought in more than $275 million including a $145 million PIPE.
Its product is the Kodiak Driver, a vehicle-agnostic virtual driver combining AI software with modular hardware.
The commercial business is long-haul and industrial trucking; the defence business applies the same stack to military ground platforms, and the company's 2025 annual filing lists ground autonomy solutions for the US military as one of three revenue sources alongside driver-as-a-service and freight delivery.
Kodiak appointed Chet Gryczan to lead its defence business in February 2026, and maintains a dedicated defence contact channel — signals of a segment being built out rather than opportunistically served.

Kodiak trades on Nasdaq as KDK. Market data lists revenue of $3.8 million and a net loss of about $586 million for the most recent reported fiscal year, with 342 employees; the loss covers its first period as a public company following the SPAC combination, and its composition is not broken out in the sources reviewed here.
Private-market trackers put pre-listing venture funding at roughly $165 million across nine rounds from eighteen investors, with a further $100 million recorded in May 2026.
The gap between $3.8 million of revenue and a nine-figure loss is the central financial fact.
Kodiak is pre-commercial in its main market — it was still advancing toward a long-haul driverless launch as of its second-quarter 2026 results — and the defence contracts, while strategically useful, are development awards rather than production revenue.
Major customers & contracts
Kodiak's disclosed defence work runs through three relationships. In 2022 it was selected for a three-year US Army contract to deliver an end-to-end autonomous solution for the Robotic Combat Vehicle programme, receiving approximately $30 million; the award came through the Defense Innovation Unit on behalf of the Army's RCV programme office, in a cohort that also included Forterra, Neya Systems and Overland AI on autonomous navigation.
In February 2026 the US Marine Corps awarded Kodiak a contract to integrate the Kodiak Driver into Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for the Remotely Operated Ground Unit for Expeditionary Fires platform. In May 2026 Kodiak and General Dynamics Land Systems announced a strategic collaboration to deploy the Kodiak Driver across ruggedised military platforms, beginning with the Leonidas Autonomous Ground Vehicle for counter-drone operations, and to pursue Army vehicle proposals jointly.
Commercial customers include Atlas Energy Solutions, and the company has a partnership with Verizon Business.

Competitive position
In the Army ground-autonomy competition Kodiak's direct peers are Forterra, Overland AI and Neya Systems, with Applied Intuition and Scale AI competing on the machine-learning layer and Anduril and Palantir on software integration.
Kodiak is the only member of that group whose autonomy stack is funded and hardened by a commercial trucking business, which gives it more real-world driving hours than any defence-only competitor and a cost base amortised across two markets.
That is also its weakness. Forterra and Overland AI were built for off-road, GPS-denied, contested-environment operation from the start; Kodiak's core competence is highway driving, a structured environment with lane markings and predictable actors. Army leaders have said publicly that industry is nowhere near where people think on off-road autonomy.
The General Dynamics partnership is the sensible answer — pair a strong perception stack with a prime that owns the platforms and the customer relationship — but it also positions Kodiak as a supplier rather than a competitor for the integration role.
Battlefield relevance
No confirmed combat use. Kodiak's military work is at the development, integration and prototype stage across the Army RCV programme, the Marine Corps ROGUE Fires platform and the General Dynamics Leonidas counter-drone vehicle.
The Army's RCV effort has itself been subject to restructuring and public criticism over acquisition approach and the maturity of off-road autonomy.
