Background
Kuldar Väärsi founded Milrem Robotics in Tallinn, Estonia in 2013, bootstrapping the company with roughly €5.5M from Estonian investors before establishing it as Europe's leading unmanned ground vehicle developer. The company's flagship THeMIS (Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System) is a medium-weight tracked UGV designed as an open-architecture payload carrier — it has hosted weapons stations from FN Herstal and Kongsberg, ISR packages, logistics loads, and casualty evacuation configurations.
The Type-X is Milrem's heavier robotic combat vehicle under active development, intended to operate alongside main battle tanks. The MIFIK autonomy suite provides the software layer across platforms, and the Multiscope serves lighter-duty roles.
Milrem sells directly to NATO and partner-nation militaries and through integration partnerships with primes including Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, MBDA, Diehl Defence, and Nexter.
Headcount stood at approximately 200 as of 2023, up from around 118 reported in 2020, reflecting accelerated program wins across Europe.
