Background
Primer was founded in San Francisco in 2015 by Sean Gourley, a New Zealand-born physicist known for earlier research on the 'mathematics of war' and prior work advising the Iraqi government, the UN, and the Pentagon on conflict-pattern analysis; he had previously co-founded the data-visualization company Quid. Primer built a text-analytics platform using multiple machine-learning engines to summarize and contextualize large document sets, marketed to government agencies and Fortune 50/100 companies.
