Silent Hunter is a Chinese ground-based fibre-laser counter-drone system marketed by Poly Technologies for short-range defence against low-flying drones.
Overview
Silent Hunter is an electrically powered laser system offered in fixed and mobile configurations. Poly Technologies' system is described as an improved version of the Low-Altitude Laser Defending System, or LASS. At DSA 2024, the company displayed configurations rated at 10, 20 and 30 kW, with claimed engagement ranges extending to 4 km, according to Army Recognition.
Saudi Arabia is the best-documented export operator. Its Ministry of Defense showed the system in a March 2022 video, and imagery examined by Militarnyi showed a container-mounted installation associated with a Chinese low-altitude radar. Poly subsequently claimed a successful Saudi engagement against a Houthi drone. Public reporting has not independently established the system's combat effectiveness.
Silent Hunter occupies the short-range counter-drone layer of air defence. Al-Monitor describes Saudi procurement partly as a means of protecting more expensive Patriot batteries. The available evidence supports assessing it as one component of a layered defence, with performance dependent on environmental conditions and the accompanying sensors and effectors.
