Background

Skapion was incorporated in Israel in October 2025 and spent roughly seven months in stealth before emerging in July 2026. Its founding premise is that conventional air defense was built to kill single, expensive aerial targets and breaks down economically when dozens or hundreds of cheap drones arrive at once. The team assembled around that argument is unusually senior for a seed-stage company. Brig. Gen.

(res.) Pini Yungman, who ran Rafael's Air and Missile Defense Systems division and worked on Iron Dome and David's Sling, serves as founding architect. CEO Ido Bar-On came from drone maker XTEND, where he led defense and government business, and is a former IDF special-operations lieutenant colonel in the reserves. Gal Goren, previously an R&D leader at Roboteam, is chief technology officer. Co-founders Zafrir Yoeli, of Enlight Renewable Energy, and defense entrepreneur Yaron Karp complete the group.

The company is structured as a US parent, Skapion, Inc., with an Israeli subsidiary, Skapion Ltd., that employs its engineers — a deliberate inversion of the usual Israeli-startup-with-a-sales-office pattern, aimed squarely at the Pentagon as the eventual buyer.

Competitive position

The counter-drone field is crowded and consolidating fast. Epirus has the strongest counter-swarm claim, using high-power microwave — Leonidas, and the ExDECS system delivered to the US Navy — to sweep many drones at near-zero cost per shot; Skapion's kinetic interceptors cost more per engagement but reach further and are less constrained by beam geometry and onboard power.

Anduril sits atop an up-to-$20 billion US Army enterprise vehicle with Anvil, Roadrunner and Lattice, a distribution advantage Skapion cannot match. Fortem Technologies owns the fielded net-capture niche and won DHS World Cup venue protection. RTX's Coyote and Rafael's Drone Dome are the incumbent answers Skapion must undercut on price. Its real weakness is stage: every named rival has hardware in the field and paying customers, while Skapion has a team, a thesis and no published performance data.

Battlefield relevance

Nothing Skapion has built has been used in anger. The company is in subsystem testing, with live-fire and interception trials still ahead and an operational system targeted for 2027 at the earliest. The relevance is contextual.

Its founders came out of the Israeli air-defense enterprise at a moment when cheap fiber-optic and FPV drones fielded by Hezbollah have become the leading cause of Israeli battlefield deaths in southern Lebanon, and when Russian one-way attack drones arrive over Ukraine in nightly waves of several hundred. That demand signal is what the company is selling against. An adviser's assertion that the system is already proven has not been substantiated by any published trial, engagement or deployment. No confirmed combat use to date.
