Overview
The ZALA 421-16 is a Russian tactical reconnaissance UAV family produced by ZALA Aero Group, a Kalashnikov Concern company, for electro-optical and infrared surveillance, target acquisition, artillery adjustment and battle-damage assessment. It is not a single fixed specification: public sources use the designation for several related airframes, including the 421-16E, 421-16E2, 421-16EM, 421-16E5 and hybrid-electric 421-16E5G/T-16-5G.
The family occupies the recoverable tactical-ISR tier between small quadcopters and larger Russian battlefield UAVs such as Orlan-10. Its operational importance in Ukraine comes from persistence and sensor-to-shooter use: ZALA-family reconnaissance drones are repeatedly described as spotters for artillery and for ZALA's Lancet loitering munition, while also suffering documented losses to Ukrainian electronic warfare, air defense, small arms and interceptor drones.
Development
ZALA Aero was founded in Izhevsk in 2003/2004 by Aleksandr Zakharov and became part of Kalashnikov Concern in 2015, according to company-profile material summarized by Wikipedia and TAdviser. Public reporting treats the 421-16 line as a family rather than one model: SensusQ identifies the 421-16E as first tested in 2011, the smaller 421-16EM as introduced in 2012 and the 421-16E2 as unveiled at MAKS 2017, with different endurance, range and recovery arrangements across variants SensusQ.
The larger 421-16E5 extended the family into a heavier electric reconnaissance system. Airforce Technology describes it as a pneumatic-launched UAV with 6-7 hours endurance, 150 km operating range, 29.5 kg maximum take-off weight and a 5 kg payload. GlobalSecurity's profile of the 421-16E5G reports a later hybrid-electric development, also marketed as T-16-5G, with claimed 12+ hour endurance, >1,200 km flight range and serial production underway by 2021 GlobalSecurity.org. Those performance figures are manufacturer-linked claims and should not be read as independently verified combat performance.
Naming is unusually ambiguous. Russian and Ukrainian battlefield reporting often shortens the family to "Z-16," and ZALA itself has described a "ZALA Z-16" reconnaissance UAV cueing a Lancet strike ZALA Aero. ZALA also markets a separate smaller product called ZALA Z-16E, with 3.5 hours endurance, 50 km range and a 12 kg maximum take-off weight ZALA Aero. Open sources do not cleanly establish whether every "Z-16" battlefield reference denotes that smaller product or shorthand for the broader 421-16 family.
