The 2S4 Tyulpan is a Soviet 240 mm self-propelled mortar combining a tracked carrier with an externally mounted heavy mortar for attacks on fortified positions, described in the US Army's equipment manual.

Overview

The 2S4 carries the 240 mm 2B8 mortar on a tracked armored vehicle. The US Marine Corps' equipment card gives a combat weight of 27.5 tonnes and ranges of 9.65 km with conventional high-explosive ammunition and 18 km with rocket-assisted ammunition. Its heavy projectile and high-angle trajectory suit attacks on defensive positions.

Powered ammunition handling reduces the burden of serving the mortar, but the detachment works outside the armored hull during firing. The US Army description identifies limited traverse and crew exposure as design limitations. Russia continues to employ the type in Ukraine, where the 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade claimed its destruction of a Tyulpan in May 2026.
