The A-10 Thunderbolt II, commonly called the Warthog, is a single-seat US close-air-support aircraft built around the seven-barrel GAU-8/A 30 mm cannon.

Overview

The A-10 Thunderbolt II is an armored, twin-turbofan attack aircraft designed to support ground forces through persistent operations at low altitude and comparatively low speed. Its defining features are the GAU-8/A cannon, titanium cockpit armor, redundant flight systems and widely separated engines mounted high on the rear fuselage. The current A-10C configuration adds digital avionics, targeting pods, precision-guided weapons and data links to a design that first entered US Air Force service in 1977.

The aircraft has served only with the United States Air Force, including Air Combat Command, the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Command. An Air & Space Forces Magazine inventory lists 163 aircraft, although the exact fleet following fiscal 2026 divestments is not publicly established. Congress required the service to retain at least 103 aircraft through 30 September 2026.

The A-10 is optimized for permissive or semi-permissive airspace rather than operations inside dense, modern air defenses. Its persistence, large weapons capacity and relatively low operating cost remain useful against ground forces, small boats and uncrewed aircraft, while its lack of radar and limited speed constrain independent target acquisition and survivability. Combat employment in the Middle East during 2025-2026 demonstrated both sides of that balance: A-10s were credited with counter-drone and maritime-strike missions, but one aircraft was hit during a combat search-and-rescue mission and another was severely damaged on the ground.
