Overview

The HESA Ababil, named for the Persian word for "swallow," is one of Iran's longest-running uncrewed-aircraft families. Built by the Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Company, or HESA, the family encompasses compact target drones, short-range surveillance aircraft, twin-tail attack models and larger armed reconnaissance platforms. Iran Watch identifies the Ababil alongside the Mohajer and Shahed families as a mainstay of Iran's drone arsenal.

Ababil is better understood as a sequence of related airframes than as one aircraft with a stable specification. The small Ababil-2 family dates to the programme's early period, while the wider-span Ababil-3 is a substantially redesigned intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platform. The Ababil-5, unveiled in 2022, adds markedly greater endurance and a four-weapon load. Published performance figures therefore vary sharply by variant.

Iranian armed services operate Ababil aircraft, while variants or locally designated derivatives have appeared in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan and Yemen. The family has also crossed from reusable aviation into one-way attack systems: Conflict Armament Research identifies the Houthi Qasef-1 as an Iranian-manufactured design derived from the Ababil-CH or Ababil-T. That branch is operationally closer to a loitering munition than to the recoverable UAVs covered by this entry.
