Overview
ASGARD is the British Army's program to build an AI-enabled targeting and command-and-control network — what the UK Ministry of Defence calls a "digital targeting web." Rather than a single piece of equipment, it is a network of existing and new systems — ISR drones, AI target-recognition software, command-and-control suites, fire-control applications and strike drones — stitched together so a target found by any sensor can be developed, legally reviewed and struck with far less human "swivel-chairing" between stations. The MOD says it exploits "AI and novel communications networks" to provide rapid targeting and decision support at greater distances than before.
The name is not a published acronym: the MOD has released no expansion, and Forces News attributes it to the home of the gods in Norse mythology. ASGARD is the British Army's contribution to a wider cross-service Digital Targeting Web the UK has committed to fielding by 2027, backed by more than £1 billion, per GOV.UK. Chief of the General Staff Gen Sir Roly Walker has framed it explicitly on the Ukrainian model, saying the UK now "possesses a similar Recce-Strike system to the one used by Ukraine to maul Russian forces in the Donbas." Its headline performance figures — a corps planning cycle cut from 72 hours to one, daily target throughput up roughly tenfold — are the Army's own claims from exercises, not independent assessments.
Development
ASGARD was announced by the Defence Secretary in October 2024 and moved at a pace unusual for UK procurement: contracts were awarded in January 2025 and a prototype capability deployed four months later on NATO's Exercise Hedgehog in Estonia in May 2025, according to GOV.UK. DE&S credits the speed to a novel acquisition approach pairing industry engineers with military "tradecraft experts."
The clearest technical account comes from Calibre Defence: the first spiral wired existing and new systems — Systematic's SitaWare as the C2 backbone, Anduril's Lattice mesh, Helsing's Altra target-recognition software and HX-2 strike drones, and specialist fires and airspace applications — into a single sensor-to-shooter web. After the Estonia trial, the MOD funded a second phase focused on corps- and divisional-level lethality, per GOV.UK, with Breaking Defense reporting the go-ahead in July 2025. In January 2026 the MOD signed 26 companies to a four-year "Digital Decision Accelerators" framework — the stated primary delivery route for ASGARD — per Computer Weekly.
