China's independent global positioning, navigation and timing constellation, combining open and restricted signals with a distinctive satellite short-message service.

Overview

BeiDou, formally the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, is China's satellite-based positioning, navigation and timing system. Its current global generation, BDS-3, entered worldwide service in 2020 and operates alongside the earlier regional BDS-2 constellation. It is a civil infrastructure network and a strategic military capability: Beijing's public description emphasizes transportation, agriculture, disaster response and consumer services, while US research assesses that ending Chinese military dependence on the US-operated GPS system was a central reason for its development.

BDS-3 uses 30 satellites distributed across medium Earth, geostationary and inclined geosynchronous orbits. This mixed architecture provides global navigation while concentrating additional coverage and communications capacity over China and the Asia-Pacific. In addition to open positioning and timing signals, BeiDou offers restricted services for authorized users and a short-message function that can transmit text or data through the constellation without relying on terrestrial cellular networks.

BeiDou gives China sovereign control over a foundational part of modern military operations, including force tracking, precision navigation and weapons guidance. It also supports a wider international ecosystem of receivers, ground stations and national infrastructure. The system's civil availability is global, but access to its restricted service and the extent of its integration into foreign military platforms are less transparent.
