The C-130J Super Hercules is a four-engine medium tactical airlifter and the current-production member of the C-130 family, optimized for short-field transport and a wide range of specialist missions.

Overview

The Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules is a comprehensive redesign of the C-130 Hercules rather than a simple modernization of earlier C-130E and C-130H aircraft. It retains the family's high-wing, rear-ramp configuration while introducing Rolls-Royce AE 2100D3 engines, six-bladed composite propellers, digital avionics and a minimum crew of two pilots and one loadmaster. The design is produced in the standard C-130J configuration and as the stretched C-130J-30, which provides additional cargo volume.

The aircraft occupies the medium tactical tier between smaller transports and strategic airlifters. Its principal roles include movement of personnel and palletized cargo, paratroop and equipment airdrop, medical evacuation and operations from comparatively short or austere airfields. Specialist derivatives extend the airframe into aerial refueling, combat search and rescue, special operations, gunship, weather-reconnaissance, maritime-patrol and command-relay missions.

More than 560 aircraft had been delivered by early 2026, although the exact September 2026 total is not publicly established. Lockheed Martin described Mexico as the newest member of a fleet spanning more than two dozen countries in its January 2026 announcement. The scale of that installed base, combined with continuing US procurement and a mature international support network, remains the type's central advantage in the tactical-airlift market.
