CAMM / Sea Ceptor

A British modular surface-to-air missile family fielded at sea as Sea Ceptor and on land through Sky Sabre, built around an active seeker and soft vertical launch.

Overview

CAMM, the Common Anti-Air Modular Missile, is an MBDA surface-to-air missile family developed through the United Kingdom's Future Local Area Air Defence System programme. The missile equips the Royal Navy under the Sea Ceptor system name and the British Army through Land Ceptor, whose complete service configuration is known as Sky Sabre. It is intended to protect ships, deployed forces and fixed assets against aircraft, uncrewed aircraft and missile threats.

The family combines a common interceptor with platform-specific launchers, radars and command systems. This separates CAMM from air-defense products tied to a single launcher or sensor architecture: the same basic missile can serve aboard a frigate or in a dispersed land battery. Its soft-launch method, in which the missile is ejected before its motor ignites, reduces launcher efflux requirements and permits engagement in any direction.

CAMM replaced the Royal Navy's Sea Wolf and the British Army's Rapier systems. The baseline missile is supplemented by the longer-range CAMM-ER, while CAMM-MR is intended to extend the family into a higher performance class. Open sources do not consistently establish the baseline missile's maximum range, and detailed seeker, warhead and engagement-performance data remain restricted.
