EU HYDEF

EU HYDEF is a European technology-maturation programme developing an endo-atmospheric interceptor against hypersonic threats, led by Spain's SMS Defensa and managed by OCCAR.

EU HYDEF is a European Union-backed technology-maturation programme developing an endo-atmospheric interceptor against hypersonic threats.

Overview

EU HYDEF, formally the European Hypersonic Defence Interceptor, is an early-stage European programme intended to establish the technologies and system architecture for an endo-atmospheric counter-hypersonic interceptor. The European Defence Fund and Belgium, Germany, Norway, Poland and Spain co-fund the effort. OCCAR manages it on behalf of the European Commission and participating states, while Spain's SMS Defensa leads an industrial consortium that includes Diehl Defence of Germany and NAMMO of Norway.

The programme had completed its feasibility phase by August 2026, when its Block 0 critical technologies had reached at least Technology Readiness Level 3. That status denotes experimental proof of concept rather than a prototype approaching operational deployment. No interceptor has flown, and no public figures establish its engagement range, altitude, speed, seeker, warhead, unit cost or planned in-service date.

HYDEF is one of two parallel European counter-hypersonic interceptor projects. The competing MBDA-led HYDIS effort selected its own interceptor concept in July 2026, leaving Europe with overlapping programmes and no publicly settled route from technology development to a fielded common weapon.

Ukrainian Drone Designs Move Into European Factories

Facing a $27 billion defence funding shortfall, Ukraine has stopped asking Europe only for weapons and started asking for production lines. The deals moving Ukrainian designs into European plants are inverting who supplies whom.
