HQ-11

China's HQ-11 is a mobile short-to-medium-range terminal air-defence system combining vertical-launch missiles with a Type 1130-derived close-in gun system.

Overview

The HQ-11, also called Red-11 or Hong Qi-11, is a Chinese mobile air-defence system intended for terminal protection of military units and key sites. Rather than mounting its missiles and gun on one chassis, the system distributes them across separate wheeled vehicles: an eight-cell vertical-launch missile vehicle, a close-in weapon system vehicle derived from the Type 1130 naval Gatling gun, and a command and surveillance element. This architecture places the HQ-11 between gun-only point-defence systems and longer-range surface-to-air missile batteries.

The system is operated by the People's Liberation Army Air Force. Publicly reported engagement ranges are 30 km against aircraft and 20 km against missiles, although detailed test data have not been released. China displayed the HQ-11 alongside longer-range systems during its September 2025 military parade, presenting it as the terminal layer within a broader air-and-missile-defence network.
