HQ-19

China's road-mobile exo-atmospheric interceptor, designed to defeat medium-range ballistic missiles through direct impact and provide an upper tier for the country's layered missile defenses.

Overview

The HQ-19, assigned the NATO reporting name CH-AB-2, is a Chinese surface-to-air missile system optimized for exo-atmospheric ballistic-missile defense. It is intended to intercept medium-range ballistic missiles during midcourse and terminal flight, above the engagement layer occupied by conventional long-range systems such as the HQ-9B. Open-source accounts also credit it with potential capability against hypersonic glide vehicles and satellites in low Earth orbit, although China has not released an official specification or a detailed account of its operational deployment.

The system combines a road-mobile six-round launcher, a hit-to-kill interceptor and long-range radar support. It is commonly compared with the US THAAD system because both use kinetic interception against high-altitude ballistic targets. The Taiwanese Institute for National Defense and Security Research assesses the HQ-19 as broadly comparable to THAAD at campaign level, while placing it within a larger Chinese anti-ballistic inventory that also includes the HQ-9B, HQ-26, HQ-29, DN-1 and DN-2.
