JDAM / JDAM-ER

A Boeing-built guidance-kit family that converts conventional aircraft bombs into all-weather precision weapons, with winged and powered variants providing progressively greater stand-off range.

Overview

The Joint Direct Attack Munition is a modular tail and strake kit rather than a complete weapon. It combines inertial navigation, satellite guidance and movable tail fins to convert Mk 80-series general-purpose bombs and selected BLU penetrators into precision-guided munitions. The basic kit serves bomb bodies from the 230 kg to 910 kg classes, while Laser JDAM adds a terminal laser seeker for moving or relocatable targets.

JDAM-ER adds a deployable wing kit, extending nominal reach from approximately 24-28 km for the basic weapon to roughly 72-83 km, depending on configuration and source. The powered JDAM-LR, designated GBU-75, adds a small turbojet and is intended to exceed 555 km while carrying a 230 kg-class payload. Across the family, the central attraction is the conversion of widely available bomb stocks into comparatively inexpensive precision weapons rather than the purchase of a wholly new missile.

JDAM has been employed in repeated US and allied air campaigns since 1999. Its use by Ukraine has also supplied an unusually well-documented case of satellite-guided weapons operating under sustained electronic attack. Russian interference has degraded some Ukrainian JDAM-ER strikes, prompting investment in encrypted M-code receivers and seekers designed to home on GPS jammers.
