MQ-4C Triton
The MQ-4C Triton is Northrop Grumman's unarmed, high-altitude maritime surveillance aircraft, operated by the U.S. Navy and Australia alongside crewed P-8A Poseidon aircraft.
The MQ-4C Triton is an unarmed, high-altitude long-endurance aircraft that provides maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance alongside crewed patrol aircraft.
Overview
The MQ-4C Triton is Northrop Grumman's maritime derivative of the RQ-4B Global Hawk, developed for the U.S. Navy. The Navy's fact file describes an autonomously operated aircraft within its Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force family of systems, paired with the crewed P-8A Poseidon. Triton supplies persistent surveillance across large maritime areas; the companion aircraft can investigate contacts.
The Navy lists endurance exceeding 24 hours. Northrop Grumman specifies operation above 15,240 m and a range of 13,705 km, converted from its published 7,400 nautical miles. Its sensor combination supports surface surveillance and intelligence collection during long missions over water.
The United States and Australia operate Triton. Australian Defence identifies Australia as the first foreign customer, with aircraft based at RAAF Base Tindal and an operations headquarters at RAAF Base Edinburgh. Australia's employment model assigns broad-area search to Triton and contact investigation to P-8A aircraft, according to Army Recognition's account of the Australian capability declaration.
Triton has also supported U.S. surveillance in the Persian Gulf. A Navy aircraft crashed on 9 April 2026; the service's mishap record confirms the loss, while the cause remains not publicly established, as documented by The War Zone.
