Overview

ULTRA is a light, fully autonomous tactical ground vehicle built in-house by Overland AI, a Seattle-based defense-autonomy company founded in 2022 and led by co-founder and CEO Byron Boots. Unlike remotely driven battlefield robots, the vehicle is designed to perceive terrain, plan routes and drive itself off-road in GPS-denied and communications-degraded environments, using the company's OverDrive autonomy software, its SPARK sensor-and-compute hardware kit, and the OverWatch command-and-control interface that lets a single operator task multiple vehicles.

The system moved from product launch to procurement quickly. Unveiled in April 2025, ULTRA anchored a roughly $19.7 million US Marine Corps production contract in June 2026 to resupply the Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS) counter-drone batteries — a deal Overland and the Pentagon trade press describe as the first US military production contract primed by a ground-autonomy company, per DefenseScoop and Defense News. In July 2026 the US Army named Overland AI one of four vendors for its Engineer Autonomous Breaching Capability (EABC) program, according to Soldier Systems Daily and Breaking Defense.

Development

Overland AI grew out of robotics and machine-learning research at the University of Washington and was shaped by DARPA's RACER (Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency) program, which sought a vehicle-agnostic off-road autonomy stack rather than a single robot; DARPA closed the program in January 2026, and Overland states it was the only performer team to complete all eight RACER field experiments. Before building its own vehicle, the company integrated OverDrive onto other platforms — General Dynamics' S-MET, Textron's Ripsaw M5 and the Polaris RZR, later the GM Defense ISV — and won an ~$18.6 million US Army/Defense Innovation Unit contract to develop autonomy software for the Robotic Combat Vehicle program, per The Robot Report.

ULTRA was announced on April 14, 2025 as the company's first in-house vehicle: a modular, deliberately attritable platform integrating SPARK and OverDrive, aimed at reconnaissance, counter-UAS, resupply and contested-logistics missions. Funding scaled with the product: after a $10 million Point72-led seed (May 2024) and a $32 million 8VC-led Series A (January 2025), Overland raised $100 million in February 2026, led again by 8VC, plus a $20 million TriplePoint venture-debt facility — roughly $142 million in disclosed equity — to fund ULTRA production, per The Robot Report and GeekWire.
