Overview

The Boeing P-8 Poseidon is a land-based maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft developed to replace the US Navy's turboprop P-3C Orion. Derived from the Boeing 737-800 airliner, it combines jet speed and commercial-airliner logistics with mission systems for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), intelligence collection and search and rescue. The aircraft carries sonobuoys, torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, mines and depth charges, while its radar, electro-optical and electronic-support systems allow it to survey wide maritime and littoral areas.

The US Naval Air Systems Command describes the P-8A as part of a maritime patrol family of systems operating alongside the MQ-4C Triton uncrewed aircraft. This pairing lets the long-endurance Triton maintain broad surveillance while the crewed P-8 investigates contacts, prosecutes submarines and carries weapons. Boeing stated in February 2024 that 200 aircraft were in service or on contract across nine countries, reflecting the type's emergence as the principal new-build maritime patrol aircraft among the United States and several allied air forces.

The baseline P-8A serves with the US Navy and most export customers. India operates the customized P-8I Neptune, while the Royal Air Force uses the Poseidon MRA1 designation. The type's growing European footprint supports coordinated patrols across the North Atlantic, Norwegian Sea, Baltic approaches and waters surrounding the United Kingdom.
