PLZ-05
China’s main modern tracked 155 mm self-propelled howitzer — a L/52 autoloaded gun fielded by the PLA since 2008, with no export record and no verified combat use.
China’s primary modern tracked 155 mm self-propelled howitzer — a fully autoloaded L/52 gun fielded by the People’s Liberation Army since 2008, with high claimed range but no combat pedigree.
Overview
The PLZ-05 (Type 05) is the principal tracked self-propelled howitzer of the People’s Liberation Army Ground Force, produced by NORINCO and operated exclusively by China. A 155 mm/L52 gun with a full autoloader and digital fire-control system, it represents the PLA’s transition to a modern, NATO-interoperable caliber and is integrated into combined-arms brigades for indirect fire support. Despite more than a decade in service, the PLZ-05 has never been exported and its combat record is limited to exercises and parades.
Development
NORINCO developed the PLZ-05 as a replacement for the legacy 152 mm and 122 mm towed/SP artillery inherited from the Soviet era. The system was unveiled in 2007 and entered PLA service the following year, though some sources suggest initial deliveries as early as 2005. The platform reflects a broader Chinese shift toward a 155 mm/L52 standard, with the earlier PLZ-45 (L/45) being the only other NORINCO 155 mm SP howitzer, exported to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. An uprated variant, the PLZ-05A, introduced a more powerful engine and other incremental improvements.
Design & capabilities
The PLZ-05 mounts a 155 mm/L52 ordnance capable of firing a full suite of Chinese and NATO-standard ammunition. Weaponsystems.net records a standard ERFB-BB range of approximately 39–40 km, with rocket-assisted projectiles reaching beyond 50 km; a manufacturer-linked claim for the WS-35B guided round extends to 60 km, while a 100 km figure remains unverified. The gun is served by a full autoloader that permits a burst rate of 8–10 rounds per minute, according to Military Periscope. A digital fire-control system with fiber-optic-gyro navigation enables accurate indirect fire, and the turret carries a roof-mounted 12.7 mm machine gun for self-defense. Mobility is provided by a tracked chassis; the baseline PLZ-05 uses an 800 hp diesel, while the PLZ-05A has a 1,000 hp engine, delivering road speeds of 55–65 km/h and an operational range of around 450–550 km.
Variants
- PLZ-05A – Uprated model with a 1,000 hp engine, enhanced electronics and possibly additional armor; forms the bulk of current PLA inventory.
Combat record / operational use
The PLZ-05 has no publicly confirmed combat history. It has appeared exclusively in PLA exercises, live-fire drills and national parades. The closely related export-oriented PLZ-52, unveiled in 2012, remains unsold as of 2024, underscoring the PLZ-05 family’s absence from both combat and export markets, as noted by the South China Morning Post.
Advantages
- 155 mm/L52 barrel provides extended range with rocket-assisted ammunition (over 50 km claimed).
- Full autoloader gives a high burst rate of 8–10 rds/min and rapid engagement.
- Digital fire-control and inertial navigation enable shoot-and-scoot operations.
- Compatibility with Chinese precision-guided rounds (WS-35B, laser-homing) enhances accuracy.
- Proven in extensive PLA training, with no evidence of fundamental reliability issues.
Drawbacks / limitations
- Extreme-range claims (100 km) rest on unverified manufacturer statements; real-world capabilities are uncertain.
- No combat or export record prevents operational validation in contested environments.
- Weight figures vary widely (from ~35 t to ~43 t), making survivability and mobility assessments difficult.
- Limited number produced (~320 est.) compared to the PLA’s total artillery fleet.
- Reliance on a single operator precludes feedback from multiple tactical doctrines.
Counterparts
- M109 Paladin (USA)
- Msta-S (Russia)
Outlook
The PLZ-05 remains the PLA’s standard tracked artillery the major modernisation path alongside the wheeled PCL-181. While the platform will likely receive incremental upgrades, the absence of combat experience and export success limits its international assessment. To sustain credibility, NORINCO may need to demonstrate confirmed performance under realistic conditions or achieve an export breakthrough for the PLZ-52 derivative.
