Type 054B frigate
China's new-generation general-purpose frigate, enlarging and modernising the Type 054A formula with improved stealth shaping, sensors and combat-system integration while retaining a 32-cell vertical-launch battery.
China's new-generation general-purpose frigate, designed to succeed the Type 054A as a larger and more modern fleet escort while retaining a 32-cell vertical-launch battery.
Overview
The Type 054B is a new-generation general-purpose frigate built for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). It succeeds the Type 054A, China's principal high-volume frigate class, and introduces a larger hull, revised stealth shaping, a rotating radar array, a 100 mm main gun and updated combat-system integration. Chinese state media describes it as the country's first independently developed new-generation frigate, although the class's detailed sensor, propulsion, sonar and missile configurations remain undisclosed.
The lead ship, Luohe (545), entered service with the North Sea Fleet on 22 January 2025. A second ship, Qinzhou, was subsequently reported commissioned. The class displaces approximately 5,000 tonnes according to external estimates and is around 15 m longer than the Type 054A, but retains the predecessor's 32-cell vertical-launch system. USNI News notes that the Type 054B's eventual place in PLAN force structure remains unclear, particularly because its increased hull volume did not produce a larger publicly visible missile magazine.
The program's strategic significance lies partly in production capacity. Hudong-Zhonghua and Huangpu, yards already associated with Type 054A construction, provide a mature industrial base for transitioning to the new design. If produced at sustained volume, the Type 054B could become the PLAN's next standard escort for carrier groups, surface formations and independent maritime missions.
