Pole-21

Overview

Pole-21 is a Russian electronic-warfare system built around the R-340RP jamming station and distributed antenna posts mounted on cellular communications towers or masts. Its purpose is to suppress satellite-navigation signals used by GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou receivers, thereby complicating the operation of guided munitions, cruise missiles and UAVs against protected sites. Deagel describes Pole-21 as a system for neutralizing satellite-navigation channels, while the US Army's ODIN Worldwide Equipment Guide characterizes the export Pole-21E configuration as a network of jammers placed on cell towers or masts and integrated with R-340RP transmit antennas.

The system's distinctive feature is architectural rather than simply power output. Instead of relying on one large vehicle-mounted jammer, Pole-21 distributes multiple jamming posts across telecom infrastructure to create a wider denial zone. This makes it a passive complement to kinetic air defense: it does not intercept a munition, but attempts to deprive GNSS-dependent weapons and drones of usable positioning data before they reach a target.

Development

Open-source accounts identify the developer as the Scientific and Technical Center for Electronic Warfare, also rendered as JSC STC Electronic Warfare. DEFENCE ReDEFiNED and Defense Express both attribute the system to STC REB, while The Intel Drop identifies the organization as JSC STC Electronic Warfare with work associated with Voronezh and St. Petersburg.

The system was first publicly shown in 2013 and accepted into Russian military service in 2016, according to open-source profiles summarized by Deagel. Russian state agency TASS reported in November 2019 that a Pole-21 station had arrived with a separate electronic-warfare unit of Russia's Central Military District in the Sverdlovsk region; the same official account stated that one station could establish up to 100 interference posts and operate in temperatures from -40C to +50C.

Modernization followed in the Pole-21M line. Deagel dates Pole-21M initial operational capability to April 2021 and describes it as a modernization intended to interfere with foreign satellite-navigation systems across a continuous jamming zone up to 50 km wide. Pole-21E is the export-oriented variant identified in the ODIN catalog and in reporting on Armenian use; open sources do not publicly establish the detailed hardware differences among Pole-21, Pole-21M and Pole-21E.
