QLU-11

China's semi-automatic "sniper" grenade launcher — a shoulder-fired precision weapon delivering airburst and HEDP rounds out to 2,200 m, fielded in 35mm for the PLA and 40mm for export.
Overview
The QLU-11 (also designated Type 11 or QLU-131) is a semi-automatic, shoulder-fired precision grenade launcher developed by NORINCO for the People's Liberation Army. It is the first operational grenade launcher purpose-built for long-range point engagement — a "sniper" GL — rather than area suppression. The weapon exists in two calibers: the domestic QLU-11 in 35×32mm SR, sharing ammunition with the PLA's QLZ-87 and QLG-10 families, and the export LG5 / LG5s in NATO-standard 40×53mm HV. With an integrated fire-control system, laser rangefinder, and muzzle-mounted fuze programmer, it can place an airburst round through a window at 600 m or engage light armor at 1,000 m.
Development
China's interest in a precision grenade launcher emerged from early experiments with a 25mm concept analogous to the Barrett XM109, later shifting to a larger caliber. The QLU-11 was reportedly based on the HSARI LR2 12.7×108 anti-materiel rifle, and it entered PLA service around 2011, according to Wikipedia. The export LG5 variant was marketed soon after. Development was part of a broader Chinese push to field a wholly indigenous 35mm grenade ecosystem, distinct from both NATO 40mm and Russian 30mm standards, as documented in a 2010 NDIA presentation by Yang.
Design & capabilities
The QLU-11 uses a hybrid short-recoil and advanced-primer-ignition blowback operation, with a recoiling free-floating barrel and a substantial muzzle brake to tame recoil, as detailed by Modern Firearms. It feeds from a drum magazine holding 3, 5, or 7 rounds (35mm) or 4 or 15 rounds (40mm LG5). The weapon's mass is approximately 12.9 kg on its bipod, or up to 23 kg on a tripod. Its standout feature is the Y/MJL11-005 fire-control sight, which incorporates a laser rangefinder, ballistic computer, and a muzzle fuze setter for programmable airburst rounds. This allows a gunner to lase a target, set the fuze, and fire an airburst round that detonates precisely above a defilade position or inside a window. Accuracy is claimed at an R100 of about 1 meter at 600 meters with the BGJ5 HEDP round. Maximum effective range is 1,000 meters point and up to 2,200 meters area, as recorded by the US Army ODIN database.
Variants
- QLU-11 (Type 11 / QLU-131): Domestic PLA version in 35×32mm SR, using the same ammunition family as the QLZ-87 and QLG-10.
- LG5 / LG5s: Export version chambered in 40×53mm HV NATO, accepting standard high-velocity ammunition including airburst and HEDP rounds, and marketed with a 15-round drum.
Combat record / operational use
The QLU-11's combat history is sparse but not absent. PLA Navy Marines reportedly tested it operationally during anti-piracy deployments in the Gulf of Aden, though details remain unconfirmed. The export LG5 reached the Gulf market and was photographed in use by Saudi forces on the Yemen border in 2019, employed against bunkers and fortifications, as reported by The War Zone. This represents the only documented battlefield employment of the system.
Advantages
- Unique precision-grenade-launcher concept; fills a niche between automatic grenade launchers and anti-materiel rifles.
- Programmable airburst rounds enable engagement of targets behind cover or inside structures.
- Integrated fire-control system drastically improves first-round hit probability.
- Semi-automatic feed allows rapid follow-up shots.
- Export LG5 uses widely available NATO 40×53mm ammunition, easing logistics for foreign operators.
- Light enough to be carried and operated by a two-man team (on bipod).
Drawbacks / limitations
- Heavy for a shoulder-fired weapon (~13 kg), limiting dismounted mobility.
- Complex fire-control and fuze-programming electronics require battery power and maintenance, and raise fragility concerns.
- Recoil, though managed, remains significant; prolonged firing is punishing.
- Domestic 35mm ammunition is not interoperable with any other bloc, limiting coalition use.
- Very limited combat record; real-world effectiveness and reliability in sustained operations are largely untested.
- Export LG5's airburst ammunition is proprietary, and availability outside direct NORINCO supply is uncertain.
Counterparts
- M32 MGL (USA) — six-shot revolver grenade launcher, but designed for rapid area suppression, not precision.
- AGS-30 (Russia) — lightweight automatic grenade launcher for area fire, lacking point-target precision or airburst programming.
Outlook
The QLU-11 remains a unique capability within the PLA, with no known Western or Russian direct equivalent. Its niche — long-range, programmable-airburst precision from a portable launcher — appears aligned with PLA modernization priorities for urban and complex terrain warfare. Export success has been limited to small numbers in the Gulf, and it is unlikely to see widespread proliferation given its specialized role and dependence on proprietary ammunition. The PLA is expected to continue refining the fire-control suite and possibly integrate it into broader networked infantry systems.
