Samad-3

The Samad-3 is the extended-range member of the Houthi Samad drone family, combining a small piston-powered airframe with additional fuel for one-way attacks at strategic distances.

Overview

The Samad-3, also written Sammad-3, is a small, fixed-wing one-way attack drone operated by Yemen's Houthi movement, Ansar Allah. It extends the Samad-2 airframe with a prominent fuel tank above the fuselage, trading compactness for sufficient endurance to threaten targets across the Arabian Peninsula and beyond. Houthi sources claim a range of 1,500 km, while an independent engineering analysis published by Science & Global Security estimated that the design could exceed 1,800 km, subject to payload and wind conditions.

The system occupies a middle ground between improvised commercial-component drones and purpose-built strategic strike weapons. Its airframe is slow, carries a relatively light warhead and lacks publicly established precision, but its range allows Ansar Allah to impose air-defense and warning burdens far from Yemen. The type has been associated with attacks or attempted attacks against Saudi energy infrastructure, US naval forces and Israel. A modified, reduced-warhead version called Yafa or Jaffa flew more than 2,000 km before striking Tel Aviv in July 2024, according to the Times of Israel.

The Samad-3's provenance remains contested. Ansar Allah claims indigenous design and production, while external assessments identify Iranian design influence, foreign engines and imported electronics. A UN investigation summarized by the Orion Policy Institute concluded that Houthi drones are manufactured in Houthi-controlled territory from locally available materials and high-value components sourced abroad.
