Type 095

Type 095 is the unofficial designation for China's next-generation nuclear-powered attack submarine, identified at Bohai in 2026 with a pumpjet and X-tail.

Type 095 is the unofficial designation for a Chinese nuclear-powered attack submarine under development, with an expected guided-missile role and a pumpjet identified in satellite imagery.

Overview

Type 095, also written Type 09V or Type 09-V, is the designation analysts use for a new Chinese nuclear-powered attack submarine identified at Bohai Shipyard in Huludao during 2026. The War Zone describes the designation as unofficial. Chinese authorities have not publicly confirmed the class name or specifications in the cited reporting.

The submarine is generally described as an SSN, although its expected missile-launch capability also places it in the SSGN category. In his March 2026 testimony, Office of Naval Intelligence commander Rear Adm. Mike Brookes called it the Type 095 SSGN and forecast service entry for China's next-generation nuclear submarine platforms during the late 2020s through the 2030s.

Its clearest observed features are a shrouded pumpjet propulsor and an X-tail stern arrangement, identified by Janes. These features support assessments of a departure from the Type 093 family. They do not establish its acoustic performance, weapons capacity or readiness for operational service.
