Overview
The Type 15, also identified by the designation ZTQ-15, is a light tank operated by China's People's Liberation Army. Its low-to-mid 30-tonne estimated combat weight places it substantially below China's heavy main battle tanks and reflects a specialized operational purpose: negotiating weak roads and bridges, difficult mountain routes, forests, and high-altitude terrain while retaining a tank-caliber direct-fire weapon.
The design combines a three-person crew, an autoloaded 105 mm rifled gun, modern sighting equipment, and modular protection. Chinese official reporting has emphasized plateau mobility and training rather than presenting the Type 15 as a universal replacement for heavier armor. Publicly documented activity consists of entry into service, unit deployments, exercises, and demonstrations; exact production totals and fleet strength are not publicly established.
Development
China publicly confirmed that the Type 15 had entered service in late 2018. The Chinese Ministry of National Defense identified the new tank as part of the People's Liberation Army's equipment modernization, while China Military Online subsequently reported its appearance with operational forces.
The development requirement centered on terrain and infrastructure that constrain heavier main battle tanks. Lower vehicle mass improves access to mountain routes, weak bridges, soft ground, and high-altitude operating areas, where mobility and logistical burden can be as consequential as maximum armor protection. Public sources do not establish a first-build year, total development cost, initial production quantity, or a detailed procurement chronology.
The Type 15's fielding with the PLA's Xinjiang Military Command was reported by Janes, consistent with the tank's intended use in western China's mountainous and high-altitude operating environments. Export development has proceeded through the related VT-5 configuration, which shares the Type 15's lineage but should not be treated as an identical designation.
