UMPK-PD

A jet-powered Russian glide munition that extends the UMPK concept toward cruise-missile range while retaining the cost and production logic of air-delivered bombs.

Overview

UMPK-PD is the reported powered, extended-range development of Russia's UMPK glide-bomb family. Whereas the original UMPK adds wings and satellite-aided guidance to a conventional FAB free-fall bomb, the powered generation incorporates a small jet engine to sustain flight after release. Open-source reporting places its estimated reach at 150–200 km, compared with roughly 60–70 km for typical unpowered UMPK attacks, although Russia has not published an authoritative specification.

The designation remains unsettled. Ukrainian authorities have identified a new jet-type guided aerial bomb as UMPB-5R, while Russian and Western reporting has also used UMPK-PD for a powered UMPK development. The available evidence does not establish whether these names describe one weapon, closely related configurations or separate programs.

Its operational significance lies less in a single performance figure than in the effect on launch tactics. A powered weapon with an estimated 150–200 km reach can permit Russian aircraft to release outside much of Ukraine's forward surface-to-air missile coverage. It therefore addresses the principal vulnerability of the earlier glide-bomb campaign: the need for launch aircraft to approach the front closely enough to expose themselves to long-range air-defense ambushes.
