Overview
The Victor U250 is an autonomous vertical-takeoff-and-landing cargo aircraft developed by ERC System GmbH of Ottobrunn, near Munich, a wholly owned subsidiary of German test-and-analysis group IABG. The company presented a full-scale representation of the aircraft at the ILA Berlin air show on 10 June 2026, pitching it primarily at military resupply, with commercial logistics, casualty evacuation and disaster response as secondary applications, according to AIN. Company figures give a payload of up to 250 kg over 300 km at a cruise speed of about 250 km/h.
The system matters less for any single specification than for the segment it targets. ERC co-founder and chief commercial officer Maximilian Oligschläger told Euractiv that armed forces identified a gap between smaller cargo drones carrying 20–50 kg and conventional helicopter-based logistics; in the 250-kg class, he said, "there is currently no market-available uncrewed platform" that moves meaningful payloads at the speed and distance forward units need. The type gained industrial weight the day it was unveiled, when Rheinmetall, ERC System and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia signed a memorandum of understanding on series production in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Development
ERC System was founded in 2020 and left stealth in July 2024, initially focused on hybrid-electric VTOL aircraft for emergency medical transport, with seed funding from IABG and a partnership with German air-rescue operator DRF Luftrettung, according to the Vertical Flight Society's eVTOL News. The Victor draws directly on the company's earlier flight-test programs: the Echo and Romeo demonstrators, and the crewed Charlie program. Romeo — a 2.7-tonne lift-and-cruise aircraft ERC describes as the EU's heaviest uncrewed eVTOL, with roughly 500 kg payload and around 800 km range — first flew in November 2025 and made its first public flight at Erding air base near Munich in February 2026, Reuters reported.
Oligschläger told AIN that military and civilian operators began approaching the company about 18 months before the ILA unveiling, asking it to apply the Romeo experience to a dedicated heavy-lift cargo drone. The Victor U250 was revealed as a full-scale mock-up on 10 June 2026, with a prototype's first flight planned for the second half of 2026, additional test aircraft in 2027, and series production targeted for 2028 — a launch Aviation Week characterized as a strategic shift toward the defense market for a startup that began in civil advanced air mobility.
