Overview
The ZTL-11, also called the Type 11, is an eight-wheeled assault gun in China's Type 08 armored-vehicle family. It provides mobile direct fire for People's Liberation Army Ground Force formations, occupying a role between lighter armored personnel carriers and heavier tracked tanks. The vehicle is listed among the PLA Ground Force's active equipment, while the broader Type 08 family supplies multiple vehicles built around a common wheeled platform.
The ZTL-11's principal weapon is a turret-mounted 105 mm rifled gun. Its combination of firepower, road mobility and a comparatively light wheeled chassis is intended to support medium-weight formations against field fortifications, lighter armored vehicles and other targets requiring direct fire. It is not a wheeled main battle tank: its protection and sustained cross-country performance do not match those of modern tracked tanks.
Development
The ZTL-11 emerged from the modular Type 08 armored-vehicle family, which uses a common 8x8 chassis as the basis for personnel carriers, command vehicles, fire-support platforms and other specialized variants. An open-source development account describes the assault gun as a successor to earlier Chinese wheeled direct-fire vehicles, pairing the newer family chassis with a larger turret and 105 mm armament.
The designation associates the vehicle with Type 11, but authoritative public dates for prototype construction, formal acceptance and the beginning of serial production are not publicly established. Chinese state reporting subsequently documented the platform in unit exercises, including live-fire field training, demonstrating that it had progressed beyond development into operational service.
The domestic ZTL-11 should be distinguished from the related ST1 export assault gun. Public reporting sometimes treats the two as interchangeable, but export configurations, equipment standards and customer arrangements cannot be assumed to apply to the PLA vehicle.
