Zuzana 2

Slovakia's autoloading wheeled gun — the Zuzana 2 mounts a fully 360°-traversing 155mm howitzer, fed by an automatic loader, on an 8×8 Tatra truck chassis, firing out to about 40 km. It is the modern, NATO-caliber heir to the Cold War DANA, and — donated and then sold to Ukraine — it has spent the war duelling Russian artillery up and down the front, one of the distinctive wheeled self-propelled guns the conflict has put to the test.

Overview

The Zuzana 2 (SpGH Zuzana 2) is a Slovak 155mm 8×8 wheeled self-propelled gun-howitzer developed by Konštrukta-Defence. It pairs a 155mm/52-calibre gun with an automatic loader (handling both projectile and propellant charge) in a fully-rotating turret mounted on a Tatra 8×8 truck chassis — a distinctively Central European approach to self-propelled artillery that descends from the 152mm DANA and the earlier 155mm Zuzana. The wheeled chassis gives it high road speed and strategic mobility (it can self-deploy long distances quickly), while the autoloader and 360° turret give it a high rate of fire and the ability to engage in any direction. It is a NATO-standard, mobile, long-range artillery system that gives Slovakia (and now Ukraine) a modern shoot-and-scoot capability — and one of the more unusual designs in the Western artillery park.

Development

The Zuzana 2 is the latest in a Slovak/Czechoslovak lineage of autoloading wheeled artillery: the 152mm DANA (the world's first wheeled self-propelled gun-howitzer with an autoloader), evolved into the 155mm Zuzana (45-calibre), and then the Zuzana 2 with a longer 52-calibre gun and improved systems, per Wikipedia and Konštrukta. It was accepted into Slovak Army service in July 2021. As with so many Eastern European systems, its profile rose sharply with Ukraine: Slovakia agreed to supply Zuzana 2 howitzers (an initial batch of around 16, with further orders, jointly financed with allies), and Ukrainian crews have used them in combat against Russian forces. The Zuzana 2's defining features are its autoloader and wheeled mobility. The 155mm/52-calibre gun sits in a turret with full 360° traverse atop a four-axle Tatra 8×8 chassis (with a central tyre-inflation system for soft ground), per Konštrukta and Military Factory. The automatic loading system handles both the shell and the modular charge, giving a high sustained rate of fire and reducing crew workload and exposure, while the 52-calibre barrel reaches about 40 km with assisted projectiles, per Militarnyi. The wheeled chassis trades some cross-country capability for high road speed, long self-deployment range and lower logistics burden than a tracked gun — well suited to the shoot-and-scoot tactics essential to surviving counter-battery fire. It fires the full range of NATO 155mm ammunition, including precision rounds. The trade-offs are the wheeled ones — less protection and rough-terrain mobility than a tracked system like the Krab or PzH 2000 — but the combination of autoloader rate-of-fire, 360° engagement, range and road mobility makes it a capable, distinctive artillery piece.

Combat record / operational use

The Zuzana 2's combat record is, like its Polish and Czech cousins, written in Ukraine. Slovakia's donation/sale of Zuzana 2 howitzers (an initial 16, with allied-funded follow-ons) put the system into Ukrainian artillery units, where it has been used for fire support and counter-battery work against Russian forces, with Ukrainian crews praising its range, rate of fire and mobility. As with all artillery in Ukraine, it operates under the constant threat of drones and counter-battery fire, and sustaining a relatively rare foreign system in wartime poses logistics challenges. Its operational significance is as part of the broad NATO-caliber artillery package that transformed Ukrainian firepower, and as a demonstration of the autoloading-wheeled-gun concept in high-intensity combat. For Slovakia, the Zuzana 2's wartime use is a showcase for Konštrukta-Defence and the country's artillery tradition.

The Zuzana 2 belongs to the wheeled 155mm self-propelled-gun class alongside France's Caesar, Sweden's Archer and Germany's KNDS RCH 155 — and contrasts with tracked systems like Poland's Krab and Germany's PzH 2000. Its distinctive features within that group are the autoloader handling both shell and charge and the fully-rotating 360° turret, inherited from the pioneering DANA lineage — where the Caesar and Archer use different (and in some respects simpler) approaches. In Ukraine it has fought alongside all of these as part of the Western artillery package. The Zuzana 2's distinction is its Central European design heritage: a continuous Slovak/Czechoslovak tradition of autoloading wheeled guns, brought up to NATO 155mm standard and tested in a major war.

Outlook

The Zuzana 2 is Slovakia's flagship artillery system and a combat-tested member of the wheeled-gun family the Ukraine war has validated. Its trajectory is continued production for Slovakia and Ukraine (with allied financing), ongoing combat use, and the leverage of its battlefield record for exports from a small but capable producer. The variables to watch are wartime sustainment and survivability against the drone-and-counter-battery threat, production capacity against demand, and how the autoloading-wheeled-gun concept fares against rival approaches. As one of several Eastern European artillery systems proven in Ukraine, the Zuzana 2 reflects how the war has spotlighted the region's defence industries — and carries forward a distinctive Central European artillery tradition into the modern NATO-caliber, drone-saturated battlefield.
