Zuzana 2

Slovakia's autoloading wheeled gun — the Zuzana 2 puts a 360°-traversing 155mm howitzer with an automatic loader on an 8×8 truck, firing to 40 km. The DANA's modern NATO-caliber heir, donated and sold to Ukraine, where it has duelled Russian artillery across the front.

Slovakia's autoloading wheeled gun — the Zuzana 2 mounts a fully 360°-traversing 155mm howitzer, fed by an automatic loader, on an 8×8 Tatra truck chassis, firing out to about 40 km. It is the modern, NATO-caliber heir to the Cold War DANA, and — donated and then sold to Ukraine — it has spent the war duelling Russian artillery up and down the front, one of the distinctive wheeled self-propelled guns the conflict has put to the test.

Overview

The Zuzana 2 (SpGH Zuzana 2) is a Slovak 155mm 8×8 wheeled self-propelled gun-howitzer developed by Konštrukta-Defence. It pairs a 155mm/52-calibre gun with an automatic loader (handling both projectile and propellant charge) in a fully-rotating turret mounted on a Tatra 8×8 truck chassis — a distinctively Central European approach to self-propelled artillery that descends from the 152mm DANA and the earlier 155mm Zuzana. The wheeled chassis gives it high road speed and strategic mobility (it can self-deploy long distances quickly), while the autoloader and 360° turret give it a high rate of fire and the ability to engage in any direction. It is a NATO-standard, mobile, long-range artillery system that gives Slovakia (and now Ukraine) a modern shoot-and-scoot capability — and one of the more unusual designs in the Western artillery park.

Development

The Zuzana 2 is the latest in a Slovak/Czechoslovak lineage of autoloading wheeled artillery: the 152mm DANA (the world's first wheeled self-propelled gun-howitzer with an autoloader), evolved into the 155mm Zuzana (45-calibre), and then the Zuzana 2 with a longer 52-calibre gun and improved systems, per Wikipedia and Konštrukta. It was accepted into Slovak Army service in July 2021. As with so many Eastern European systems, its profile rose sharply with Ukraine: Slovakia agreed to supply Zuzana 2 howitzers (an initial batch of around 16, with further orders, jointly financed with allies), and Ukrainian crews have used them in combat against Russian forces. The Zuzana 2 thus joined the international package of Western artillery — alongside the Polish Krab, French Caesar, German PzH 2000 and others — that re-equipped Ukrainian gun units with NATO-caliber firepower.

Challenger 3

Britain's tank gets a new gun at last — the Challenger 3 rebuilds the Challenger 2 with an all-new turret and a NATO-standard 120mm smoothbore cannon, ending decades of Britain going its own way with a rifled gun. A modest 148-tank fleet, with first deliveries due in 2027.

Type 212 / 214 Submarine

The submarine that "disappears" — Germany's Type 212/214 pioneered near-silent hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion, letting a non-nuclear boat stay submerged for weeks and slip past sonar so well it has "sunk" carriers in NATO war games. The world's benchmark export AIP submarine.

CZ BREN 2

The Czech rifle gone global — CZ's BREN 2 is a light, fully ambidextrous, multi-calibre assault rifle that swaps between 5.56 NATO and 7.62×39 and a range of barrel lengths. The Czech Army's standard arm, adopted by French special and police units and licence-built in Hungary.
