2K12 Kub (SA-6 Gainful)

A Soviet tracked surface-to-air missile system designed to protect mobile ground forces against aircraft operating at low and medium altitudes.

Overview

The 2K12 Kub, designated SA-6 Gainful by NATO and exported as the 2K12E Kvadrat, is a Soviet mobile surface-to-air missile system developed for the air defense of maneuvering ground formations. Its combination of tracked launchers, battery-level radar guidance and semi-active radar-homing missiles made it a prominent medium-range threat during the Cold War, particularly after its combat debut in the Middle East.

A standard battery centers on a 1S91 self-propelled reconnaissance and guidance vehicle, commonly called the SURN or "Straight Flush," and four 2P25 tracked launchers carrying three 3M9 missiles each. The battery also uses transloader vehicles to replenish the launchers. The missile receives radio-command guidance during flight before using semi-active radar homing against a target illuminated by the battery's radar, as described by Popular Mechanics and the 2K12 Kub technical history.

Although superseded in Soviet service by the Buk family, Kub has remained operational through stored inventories, national modernization programs and transfers to Ukraine. Its mobility and existing stocks preserve utility against selected aircraft, uncrewed systems and cruise missiles, but the architecture is constrained by its ability to engage only one target at a time and by diminishing stocks of serviceable 3M9 missiles.
