Overview

The 2S9 Nona-S combines a turreted 120 mm rifled 2A51 weapon with a modified BTR-D amphibious chassis. The U.S. Army's Worldwide Equipment Guide describes a system capable of firing conventional mortar ammunition and purpose-designed artillery projectiles. Its combination of high-angle and direct fire gives airborne formations artillery support on a light tracked platform.

Russian and Ukrainian forces continue to employ the type. Ukraine's Air Assault Forces Command said four captured 2S9s were in Ukrainian hands by August 2022, including a vehicle used by the 79th Air Assault Brigade.
