Overview

The 9K33 Osa, meaning "wasp" and known to NATO as the SA-8 Gecko, is a mobile short-range surface-to-air missile system designed for low-altitude protection of maneuvering ground forces. Its defining feature is the 9A33 transporter-erector-launcher-and-radar, or TELAR, which places the system's sensors, fire-control equipment and six ready missiles on one amphibious 6x6 chassis. This arrangement allows an individual vehicle to detect, track and engage targets without depending continuously on a separate battery-level radar.

Developed in the Soviet Union and fielded during the 1970s, the Osa family includes land-based Osa, Osa-A, Osa-AK and Osa-AKM versions as well as the naval Osa-M. Its original target set centered on aircraft and helicopters operating at low altitude, but later operational use has included engagements against uncrewed aircraft and other relatively slow aerial targets.

Russia and Ukraine both employ the system in the Russia-Ukraine war. The age of the vehicles has not eliminated their utility, but interceptor availability has become a central constraint. Ukraine has supplemented inherited stocks with Polish-donated systems, missiles acquired from other regions, R-73 infrared-guided air-to-air missiles adapted for surface launch and the domestically developed RK-19 interceptor. These adaptations preserve the Osa as a mobile firing platform even as stocks of its original 9M33 missile family decline.
