BMPT Terminator
BMPT Terminator: the five- and three-person configurations, documented operators, losses in Ukraine, 2025 protection changes and the Spiridon name.
A Russian family of tank-derived fire-support vehicles, including the five-person BMPT and the three-person BMPT-72 conversion.
Reference reviewed 30 September 2026.
Overview
Russia's BMPT is a specialized armored vehicle intended to support tanks with cannon, guided-missile and machine-gun fire. Uralvagonzavod markets the family for attacking targets that threaten armored formations. The U.S. Army's ODIN equipment reference distinguishes the five-person BMPT from the three-person BMPT-72, also called Terminator 2. Neither carries an infantry squad.
Russian service has a concrete organizational milestone: Central Military District commander Alexander Lapin announced a regular company of nine vehicles in the 90th Guards Tank Division in December 2021. Rosoboronexport identified Kazakhstan as a recipient in 2016; Janes subsequently described BMPT-72 in limited Algerian service. Those records establish operators, not current fleet totals. Russian company announcement; Kazakhstan delivery statement; Janes' Algerian account.
UVZ announced another Russian delivery with added protection in October 2025 and the name Spiridon in June 2026. The naming announcement does not identify a new chassis or armament configuration. BMPT has been reported in Russia's war against Ukraine, including documented loss cases, but no reliable fleet denominator or comparative effectiveness study supports a survival rate. UVZ delivery statement; UVZ naming statement; Oryx loss record.
