Brimstone

Brimstone is a British air- and ground-launched precision attack missile combining millimetre-wave radar and laser guidance for use against moving vehicles and other difficult targets.

Overview

Brimstone is a precision attack missile developed by MBDA UK for the Royal Air Force, initially to defeat massed armoured formations from strike aircraft. Its defining feature is a seeker architecture built around millimetre-wave active radar homing, supplemented in current missiles by semi-active laser guidance. This combination provides two distinct engagement methods without depending on satellite navigation: radar can search for moving targets within a programmed area, while laser designation gives an operator greater control over target selection.

The missile can be released without requiring the launching aircraft to maintain a radar lock throughout the engagement. Multiple weapons may therefore be launched in quick succession against a target array, with each missile searching independently inside its assigned area. The manufacturer presents Brimstone as suitable for high-speed and manoeuvring land or maritime targets, although detailed seeker performance remains classified or otherwise not publicly established.

Originally associated with British combat aircraft, Brimstone acquired a second operational role after the United Kingdom supplied missiles to Ukraine in 2022. Ukrainian forces adapted the weapon for launch from improvised ground vehicles, demonstrating how a mature air-launched missile could be repurposed as a mobile surface-launched anti-armour weapon. Public reporting has not disclosed the number supplied, the complete launcher configuration or verified missile-by-missile effectiveness data.
