Overview
Chiang Kung, translated as Strong Bow and also transliterated as Qiang Bow, is a mobile anti-ballistic missile system under development by Taiwan's state-run National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST). It is intended to intercept ballistic missiles at altitudes of at least 70 km and provide the high-altitude layer of Taiwan's proposed T-Dome integrated air and missile defense network.
Published English-language accounts use several names for the program. The Taipei Times identifies it as Tien Chien IV, while other reporting uses Tien Kung IV or Sky Bow IV. These designations should be treated as reported alternatives rather than clearly established variants.
The interceptor combines a two-stage solid-propellant rocket, thrust-vector control and a land-based vertical launcher with a mobile active electronically scanned array radar jointly developed by Taiwan and the United States. T-Dome is planned to connect Chiang Kung and other interceptors through the US-made Integrated Air and Missile Defense Battle Command System. According to the Taipei Times, Taiwanese defense officials regard the high-altitude tier as a capability absent from the existing arsenal and unavailable through foreign procurement.
