Overview
The Fateh-110 is a guided Iranian short-range ballistic missile developed from the unguided Zelzal-2 line. It combines a road-mobile launcher with solid-propellant readiness, a range of approximately 200 to 300 km, and a payload of roughly 500 kg. The missile is operated within Iran's broader ballistic-missile force, whose development and employment are closely associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force, as described by Iran Watch.
“Fateh” also identifies a wider missile family. The baseline Fateh-110 should therefore be distinguished from later and generally more capable descendants, including the Fateh-313, Zolfaghar, Fateh-e Mobin, and anti-ship derivatives. Open-source reporting does not always maintain this distinction, particularly when discussing transfers or combat use.
Development
Development of the Fateh-110 began in the mid-1990s as Iran sought to add guidance and greater military utility to the Zelzal-2 rocket lineage. According to CSIS Missile Threat, the missile first flew in 2001 and entered service in approximately 2004. Iran subsequently introduced successive versions with reported improvements in range and accuracy, although open sources differ over where Fateh-110 generations end and separately named descendants begin.
The program formed part of Iran's sustained effort to build an indigenous ballistic-missile force despite international restrictions on military technology and procurement. The Arms Control Association identifies ballistic missiles as a central component of Iran's strategic capabilities, while the Iran Primer places the Fateh line within a broader progression toward more accurate solid-propellant systems.
